2 stroke pre-mix question

"If you are running pre-mix (pre-mix = small amount of 2-cycle oil mixed with fuel, accompanied by removing the metering system)" got this info from rotorhead.ca

Should i only run a pre mix if i have removed the metering system? I recently did add a pre mix of 2 stroke motorcycle oil to my gas tank when i filled up.. Might this be causing my rapid depletion of oil?

You can do it with or without the OMP. No OMP and pre-mix is absolutely necessary. With an OMP many feel that 1 oz oil / 1 gal of gas can have significant effects on the longevity of internal seals and all sealing surfaces.

Pre-mixing will not effect the rate at which your OMP injects regular oil. The computer has no way of knowing whether or not you have pre-mixed or not.

so if the OMP is is gone, should you then mix 2oz of oil per gallon?

I recommend 12-14 oz per tank with an OMP, 1.5-2 oz per gallon without.

This doesn't make sense, I thought some people thought adding 1-2 oz WITH an OMP helped ...

don't you mean add 1-2 oz per gallon with and 12-14 oz per gallon without ? ... or am I mixed up?

He said 12-14oz per TANK with OMP, not per gallon. That works out to 0.6-0.7 oz per gallon.

I've found that more than about 8oz per tank fouls plugs and makes the engine feel a little lethargic unless you're constantly running at higher load, but that depends on a number of factors like tuning. 8oz is probably pretty good for street use, and more for the track.

Premix Adaptor

Has any one used this product?

http://www.rotaryaviation.com/oil_in...p_adaptors.htm

Its an adapter to use premix with the omp instead of using the oil in the pan.

I just want to help clarify:
I've been premixing with my OMP completely "disconnected" for over 2 years now, and after reasearching this quite a bit back when I started premixing, I found that the best ratio to use is 1oz per gallon. Very easy to remember as well. Any more than that will hinder gas mileage and really won't be of any further help. I've been using Pennzoil synthetic blend 2-stroke premix. I would suggest that if your OMP is still working, to add 1/2oz per gallon. Also, in case you want to ask, one of my resources is a 200 page book about mazda rotary racing (I forget the name as it is currently at a friend's house). Hope this helps.

he's right on; since i buy fuel by the 5gal (110octane) i add 4oz to every 5gal... thinning out the smoke a bit

anyhow - omp or not - a general rule is 1oz to 1gal;

Many people use this, but you cannot fit the adapter with stock twins because of the front oil return tube.

I have an unused adapter I am about to sell at 1/2 price of new. PM if anyone is interested.

I use about 1oz/gallon with my OMP...I love the rich oil smell on a fresh start up early in the morning with the garage door closed.

So acording to this.. one ounze per gallon WITHOUT OMP and 1/2 ounze per gallon WITH OMP.

This gives a ratio of

1:128 WITHOUT OMP
and
1:256 WITH OMP

Interesting.

so mixing in two stroke oil into your gas is suppost to do what? improve preformance, or just help lubricate? I know that rotorys inject a small amount of oil into the chamber as part of their function, is this just suppost to add to this?

If you use KLOTZ it will smell SO good....

One question that I have never had answered to my satisfaction is:
Does premixing lower the effective octane rating, thus making detonation more likely?

^^ mixing petroleum premix does. Mixing synthetic premix oil doesn't. I wish I could remember the name of the book I have where I found all this out.....

KLOTZ can be obtained from any motorcycle shop, as can a lot of other premium two stroke pre-mix oils. Wal-Mart has a selection of dino and synthetics pre-mixers, everything from PENNZOIL (yuck) to Poulan.
Personally I go to the bike shops, and see what the high end two strokes are running (though there are a LOT fewer two strokes even being made these days).

^ Correct. Good two-stroke pre-mix oil IS expensive. Look at Bombardier's prices for their Sea-Doo oil, it is like $40 a gallon.
