i would say water temp.. if an engine fails it is usually due to overheating or overboosting

i'll second that one,
when my engine popped, if i had a boost, and temp guage(my stock temp guage was busted) i woulda been saved!!

i cant believe the FD doesnt come with a boost guage,
my friends old *** crappy turbo volvo even has a stock boost guage!

Other then a boost gauge I would say a water temp and an a/f gauge.

I'm not sure why people are saying A/F guages. Those things literally aren't worth a ****, especially on a MAP-based fuel system. Those things flicker back and forth qualitatively and quite inaccurately. Really they're just fancy lights for riceboys. Well, most of them. I think GReddy may be the manufacturer of the one worth a nut.

An EGT guage will tell you so much more if you know how to use it, but you have to get one hot enough for a rotary (GReddy, A'PEXi, BLITZ, etc.).

gauges

egt and water temp. a/f are not very accurate unless you get a very high end one like $600 to $800 one.

Don't even bother with a A/F meter. I'll paraphrase exactly what Sokudo said, they just have pretty lights. The only time an A/F gauge gets critical is under boost, and the only pricisely acurate ones are the expensive ones i.e. uego, lambda.

The EGT gauge shows how "happy" your engine is. If a your engine is running lean it will show it as a high temperature reading and vice versa.

I must disagree that an A/F gauge is worthless. They aren't perfectly accurate but they are enough so that if you are running lean for some reason you will notice. EGT is Exhaust temp and is useful to some degree but if you are running lean (causing higher exhaust temps) the gauge won't instantly react like an A/F will. Although I don't have direct experience with EGTs I would expect that it would take time for the average temp to rise in the sender meaning that the gauge won't react fast enough. Thus pop goes your motor before your gauge shows something. I would therefore chose water temp, then A/F (and I have) and then maybe oil temp. It is a good indicator of your engine's risk as well. It will change faster than water temp and is also effected by exhaust temp because oil cools our turbos to some degree and they are naturally driven by exhaust gasses.

I'd have to second the vote on the EGT. If you're running too lean, an EGT could be your last saving grace before detonation...

Isn't the Greddy A/F gauge only $200-$300? And its pretty accurate is it not?

does the DEFI measure hot enough for rotary temps??

aslo, the greddy and apex EGTs go up to 1200 C. what does the DEFI go up to?? it says 20, so is that 2000 F??

what does 2000 degrees F = in C??

thanks

2000 F is ... ummm ... do math (2000-32)*(5/9) = 1093 C.

0piston you could also paraphase what I said, which Rob (sokudo) essentially repeated.

By the way Rob, have you seen the "secret site" yet? If not, get Alf to show you or send me a PM.

EGT over AF because AF is really just your O2 sensor reading and if you have ever caught any discussions on O2 sensor dyno tuning you will know what this is really useless. The EGT should respond quicker. The hotter the temps the leaner the engine is. I believe rotary engines are in the 1650F range? I am waiting till I go single to add an EGT, so I can't varify till then. The idea is that you can watch it and compare it to its normal motion kind of like your boost gauge.

other than a boost gauge:
1. water temp gauge
2. fuel pressure gauge
