2 min throwout bearing tip
I'm in the process of removing my engine and one of the steps require the throwout bearing from being released so that the 2 can be separated.
Alot of help came from here:
http://www.fd3s.net/clutch_install.html
After I removed the slave cylinder w/o removing the hydraulics and opened up the service hole. I had trouble keeping the fork pressed towards the back of the car, it did move as indicated, but it kept swinging back to its normal position, which made it impossible to release the throwout bearing.
What I did was this:
Remove the service plate with the label "pull-type clutch..etc" Inside that hole, you will see the throwout bearing and to the right of the bearing, the fork with a spring on it. Take a flat-head screwdriver, and press on the plate..pushing it towards the back of the car, you will see the spring pushing the throwout bearing in and out of the pressure plate splines. Take another screwdriver and align the flat tip against the collar, that is a thin metal clip that attaches to the pressureplate fingers. Without having to look at it, cause when you are laying on the floor and the engine/tranny is 5" from your face and both hands are holding a screwdriver, its hard to get a light up in there.
Now pressing on the fork till it stops [that should seat the release bearing up against the pressure plate] and with the other hand, twist the screwdriver.
Take the light and look for another spot on the collar that is not completely separated from the pressure plate and align the screwdriver. At this point, the fork should stay pressed back and you can use that hand to hold a light while you are looking for another spot to twist the screwdriver.
Now you are done! Unbolt the 5 bolts from the tranny/engine along with the 2 bolts that mount the engine to the frame and the 2 will separate!
Hope that helps anyone out there having trouble
