2 fire extinguishers are better than 1...

Hi all....

How many of you carry 2 fire extinguishers in your car?... This past week a friend of mine lost his car to a small engine fire that grew and engulfed his car because the fire extinguisher that he had failed to operate....

Please, everyone carry 2 fire extinguishers, instead of 1..... Just encase of a failure!....

Dwayne

Or you could just maintain the one fire extinguisher...

It's not hard to shake them up occasionally...

OR carry a larger compacity co2 fire extinguisher in the trunk.... they do not emit the nasty powder, which is a heavy plus... do not tend to need service (check the guage often) and refill (cheap as hell) after all use!

having two fire extinguishers is not the best idea... do u see two in every place in a building or house? No, you see one that is kept maintained properly.

Actually that''s not enough unfortunately..

Especially in a car, the constant agitation compresses the powder at the bottom of the extinguisher...

If you turn the extinguisher over gently, you should feel the powder move from one end to the other.. if it doesn't a really good shake, or even throwing it on the ground, will loosen the powder up..

Even extinguishers in a building are prone to this if they are near (for instance) a door which slams closed often...

Where can you get a good c02 extinguisher? I think most that are sold currently are the nasty powder kind.

Dang those are expensive.

Hey I have a question: Is having a fire extinguisher in the car during the summer a problem? I mean the thing is under lots of pressure and I was wondering if the hot weather can cause it to explode or vent out of some kind of pressure relief?

edit:
I guess I'm paranoid but because of this, I havent gotten a fire extinguisher for my fd yet (although I know I should have one).. I'll probably try to buy one of those that are filled with halon.

What if 2 is not enough, how about 3? What if 3 is not enough?

You know, there comes a point where you can't worry about things that much. There is only so much you can do. The rest is for insurance to worry about.

Anyone want to share pics with fire extinguisher locations on FD's? I saw a pillar mount one but not sure if that is a good location.

Thanks

No problems as of yet. Those bottles can take a lot more pressure than what they come filled with.

I got an automotive one for around $10 at Yard Birds and store it in the bin behind the drivers seat. Its not the best one out there but its a whole lot better than nothing at all.

Damn near the only voice of reason in this thread...!

I'm amazed some of you owners even manage to get over your fears/paranoia enough to ever drive these cars.....seriously guys, it must suck to live in such fear all the time.

I do keep a small extinguisher in the passenger side bin. If that doesn't work, well, then I wait for the insurance settlement.

BTW -- A-pillar mounted extinguishers are worthless ricer crap, please don't put them in your FD.

I'm a victim of an engine fire...

Order of importance from experience:

1) FULL COVERAGE insurance

2) Fire extinguisher

3) Being able to get to the fire... huh? what f does that mean? Glad you asked. Something most people don't think about: That damn hood gets HOT! too damn HOT to even touch it with your bare hands. You can pop the hood (provide more oxygen to the fire Doh!) and squeeze the nozzle and hope that you can extenguish the fire or not... Plan for that scenario and you will ensure minimal damage.

Yep. I even carry a fire extinguisher but that didn't keep the garbage truck from backing into my carport at the time and collapsing it on my car! I should have parked it in a bunker!

I keep a 2-lb Halon in the FD, and a 5-lb Halon in the trunk of my 500E.

Perhaps I should put a 5-lb Halon in the trunk of the FD . . .

:-) neil

BTW: I used the 5-lb Halon to put out an oil-fire when my friend was deep-frying a turkey outside, and laid CARDBOARD on the ground to soak-up the oil. Can you say WICK!

Since it was Halon, no damage to the turkey & oil, just snuffed the fire out fast with no residue! It sure was good . . .

Update:

Nothing is fool proof....

I just spoke to my friend. It just so happens he had just purchased that fire extinguisher 2 weeks before the fire from the Home Depot....

He is now suing the Home Depot, the manufacture of the fire extinguisher and the Department of transportation....

Home Depot for selling a faulty fire extinguisher....
Fire extinguisher company for making a faulty fire extinguisher....
Department of transportation for having a H. E. L. P. network with highway cameras and road side assistance to assist people in cases like this and not responding in time....

Any thoughts on this one? Doesn't seem to be Halon or Dry Chemical

The Defendants will probably file a counter suit and join as Co-Plaintiff's against the Owner of the vehicle and auto maker for defective automotive part that was the source and origin of the fire.
