180 Thermostat pettit
I saw the 180 Thermostat for sale on pettit's website. This is like the miata thermoswitch right? Has any bought it from pettit and what does it come with?
No, it's a thermostat that opens at 180 degrees f water temp to allow coolant to circulate thru the cooling system and does not affect when the fans come on. Miata thermoswitch turns the fans on earlier than stock switch

the stocker opens at like 221(or 231). miata is something like 210.
the lower temp thermostat, just gets the coolant flowing sooner.

The stock thermostat begins opening from 177-182F and should be fully open by 203F. Depending on how the Pettit 180F t-stat is rated, it might not perform any differently than the OEM one.
The stock thermoSENSOR turns the fans on low at 221F, the Miata thermoSENSOR turns them on at 210F.
Overheating problems won't be cured by running a lower temp thermostat. If the car is running hot on the T-stat will be full open.
In many cases (in town street and auto-x type driving) the engine temp is regulated by fan operation. During freeway driving FDs usually run cooler than they do in town since they have more air flowing over the radiator independent of fan operation.
If your car runs hot (210+) at cruising speeds, say 45-50+ mph then check your t-stat for proper function. If it is OK you probably need to clean or replace the radiator.
Replacing the thermosensor will help keep temps down in town.

i apologize for not posting my answer in an assertive enough manner, for your taste. i will have to remember not to equivocate, so you can be happy.
perhaps, you will be happier if i let you be the encyclopedia of rotary knowledge.
i say kiss off and take your ego trip with you. I don't care how long you have owned a RX7 or how much knowledge you do, or do not, possess, how many posts you have, or how important you think you are. you are a grade a *******.

i have to step up and apologize. I didn't even see the error in my post when i re-read. that is why i got so pissed; i didn't see why he was knocking my post. my post was was a mix up in words and thoughts, but I can see how stupid it must look.
sorry, for the dumb post, and for the smart *** reply. i will have to proof-read more carefully from now on.
i go down today as an ignorant ***-goblin.

You're right, I could have been more tactful. It's just that over the last couple of weeks, I have seen dozens of posts of totally clueless people giving advice and my temper got the best of me.....(well, not that there aren't ALWAYS clueless people giving "advice" but it's been worse than usual IMO...)
Had a buddy of mine some time back with the Pettit T-stat - HATED it. The car would actually cool off cruising on the interstate when cold - stock temp gauge would come down from the halfway point, and the double throttle would kick back on. Ran the car TOO cold. Mind you, this is in Pensacola, Florida, which is not THAT cold.
BTW, I think the Pettit thermostat is just a OEM thermostat with a hole drilled in it. Yes, really.
I can't see any good reason to "upgrade" the thermostat. Run the stock Mazda thermostat.
BTW, this is still pending testing, but I believe the '89-91 RX-7 fan switch is a DROP IN replacement for the FD's switch, yet kicks on at the same temp as the Miata. The Miata switch screws in, but you have to modify the connector. The RX-7 switch should plug and play. I'm 99% sure on that one. Just got my temp gauge installed - I'm gonna wait and see what kind of temps I'm running before upgrading the switch so I can see the before/after.
