Well, I test drove a high mileage '93 Rex today. It ran ok. It had a boost gauge, and the most I could muster out of it consistently was 8 psi...then it would dip to about 6 and hold there.
Once I got it to go up to 10 psi...then 6 and it held at 6. What is the problem with the car?
It was pulling 16 psi at idle. It didn't run hot. The owner thinks the previous owner had the engine rebuilt. I agree since the car has 116K on the clock.
It also idled kind of funky a few times...like rough. That was after it was warmed up, and I had got on it a few times. Any ideas?
Also, the shifter was way sloppy...even when in gear. Is this normal?
The car is totally stock. He wants $10,900 for it. I think that is about $2.5K high, esp. with turbo issues.
Let me know what you guys think...

the car does have a lot of mileage, but if the motor was rebuilt then the price does seem pretty good. as for the boost problem, it could simply be a loose hose, but i would wait for some others to step in and help you out. the shakey idle thing is kinda wierd to, can you explain it in more detial??? what do you mean by rough and did you turn on the headlights or something??? as for the shifter being sloppy there is generally a little slop, but if it has over 100k it could probably use some new bushings in the shifter assembly, a cheap fix. 16psi actually seems a little high for a stock 7. i thought they were to go no higher than 12psi when stock.
ummm
he meant 16 hg/in or whatever
vaccumm not boost
my spelling sucks
seems a little high on price, but ehll i have never payed retail for a car, i paid 8,000 for my 93, with 93,000 miles, and a *brand* new engine, the only problem was low boost, that i almost have nailed down.....

Yeah, my bad. I mean it pulled 16 psi vacuum at idle.
The more I read, the more I think I didn't push the car hard enough.
It should go 10-8-10...but it slow builds to 10 after it drops off...and that happens near redline? I didn't take it to redline.
However, it shouldn't be dropping down to 6...
Anyone have any ideas about this? If I can get him to lower the price, maybe I can fix it...

If its a stock car with that kinda milage on it, 10 bucks says its a plugged cat. I had the same problem with mine when I bought it at 51k miles. And this is a commen problem.
Except I didnt know it until after I bought it and put a boost gauge on it.
Mine wouldnt get more than 5 psi on the 2nd turbo. Gutted the cat and was blessed with a nice 10-8-10 pattern.
Any idea how long its been running like that? Could be somewhat of a blessing since the engines never seen full boost.
Hope this helps,

I am going to call the owner and discuss it with him.
I am going to try to use it as a bargaining tool....
I would just buy an aftermarket down pipe, and hopefully, that would fix it..then. If that is the problem...
I hope that is it.
Could that also cause it to not reach 10 psi? It was mostly reaching 8-9 psi.

That could be one of the problems, or it could be a host of other ones too.
The twin sequential turbo setup on a FD is pretty complicated. Could be a vacuum hose (there's like 78 of them), turbo control valve, etc....
Just do a search on troubleshooting boost problems, you find a lot of info.
Also make sure you doing the boost pattern test properly. In 1st and 2nd you wont see a 10-8-10 pattern.
But if boost is building to 10 till 4500rpm then dropping to less than 8 and never recovering, I still say its a plugged pre or main cat.
Try and drive it again, and do the test properly.
