[Rx7 Boutique Tutorial] FEED Side Skirts Install

This thread is dedicated to the installation of FEED sideskirts. I have always thought this to be a very easy and straight forward install but I have seen numerous threads asking how to install them. My car just got back from the bodyshop and they decided not to put them on, so this gave me the opportunity to do this tutorial.

Install Difficulty: Easy
Install Time: 1 to 2 hour depending how much of a perfectionist you are.
Tools Needed:
Drill
3/16 drill bit
Self-Tapping Screws
Spacers
Lift / jack stands
Wrench
10MM nut

Tutorial:
Here is a picture of everything you need, as you can see my sideskirts have been installed previously because of the holes already drilled. I have done this 5 times and believe I have found the fastest and easiest way to do this install.

I got mine from LOWES, you don't need this many but couldn't find a smaller pack. You only need 10 self tapping screws.

Step 1:
Jack up the car and put it on stands
Step 2:
Take out the two bolts that are holding on the fender, they are 10MM. The two bolts are labeled one and two.

This is a picture of both bolts removed.

Step 3:
Take the 3/16 drill bit and tap a hole only through the sideskirt for the bolt closest to the tire. This is an important step, because you need to drill the hole to where you want the lip to set. Here you can see I drilled the hole, then put the bolt in to make sure it fits. Now, leave that bolt in, do NOT screw in the other fender bolt. However, you need to make a hole in the sideskirt for the second fender bolt to go into, just don't put it in.

Step 4:
Now go the the opposite end (ie the part all the way next to the rear tire), now that you have the one bolt in the front, you need to determine where this rear bolt will go. Once the rear bolt is in then all you need to do is put in 4 more self tapping screws equally spaced apart. For those who are a perfectionist I recommend getting a tape measurer and making sure that the sideskirt is perfectly aligned. To install a self-tapping bolt it is SUPER easy. Take your 3/16 drill bit and once you have aligned the sideskirt to where you want, drill through BOTH the sideskirt and frame. Now, take the bolt and wrench and push / turn the bolt into the hole. Here is a picture of the rear self tapping bolt in:

Here is what I am talking about with the bolt. You need to push it in with your palm and wrench it at the same time. Seems more difficult then it really is, it doesnt get any easier then this.

Step 5:
Now that the two main bolts are in, going back and put in the other fender bolt.
Step 6:
Put in 4 more self tapping screws equally spaced apart.
If you have a space between the sideskirt and frame when your done like this:

Then you need to put another self tapping bolt in to further secure the sideskirt to the frame and eliminate the gap.
Step 7:
Repeat these steps to the other side.
Step 8:
Enjoy your new sideskirts!
Here is a picture of them on my widebody, new wheels are coming.

Basically you need to drill a hole, so that the bolt that attaches to the fender has somewhere to go through. Your not drilling through the frame, just a hole, so the fender bolt can go through both the sideskirt and the fender, then it can screw into hole.

Make more sense?

You won't notice any difference between replica and authentic other then a BIG price difference. Shine sells them, and they aren't a complex design, so not to many things can go wrong during production. Shine sells them for $390 in CF and $300 in FRP. Feed sells them in CF for $935 + s/h from Japan, we can probably get them to you for around $700 used.

Are you drilling through metal? Wouldn't it rust over time if this is the case?

It's the same way I installed mine when I used to run the FEED kit. There's really not much else you can do.

B, you make a facebizzle yet?

They make 1/4" shouldered/ gasketed self tapping screws that would be better for this application.

Look at roofing screws, the gasketed screws would act as a sealer & dampen any vibrations that might transfer through the body (noise reduction)

I second this ^

I've been wanting a FEED style/ ShineAuto side skirt like this for my FC. I don't know if there is anyone out there that makes this skirt for the stock FC3S chassis (no TII side skirts are on my FC). I saw a post/thread about a group buy for the FC rx7 FEED style side skirts only to later find out that the side skirt were and addition to the stock TII sideskirts. I don't mind buying the FD3S FEED style side skirts and then modifying them to fit the FC but I need the specs first and then i will do a writeup so that others can do the same.

Thanks,

Matt K.

I believe they are actually the exact same size (Interchangeable between FC and FD).
