*Sigh* - I'm a moron, advice please

Just got done doing a vacuum hose job/ FPD/Injector 0rings. Other than the little pitfalls along the way (broken solenoids, busted knuckles), everything went pretty smoothly. I got the car assembled again, primed the fuel system, and tried to start it.. Nothing. Checked all the connections I could see, looks good, cranks over great. I pull a plug to check for spark - The plug smells like gas and cranking it I see it spark. I put it back together and tried it again - nothing. At this point, i figured I had the coils backwards or something. Took off the elbow and tb again. As I take off the oil filler neck, my %&^$$#@ GF comes in bitching at me, I guess I didnt put the lid down or something. She is nagging me and I'm trying to work, getting more and more annoyed with her and the car, and I slipped and yanked the oil filler tube off..

Now this is not a problem, except

ONE OF THE BOLTS TO HOLD IT ON FELL IN THE OIL FILLER NECK!!!!

I started screaming at her, she starts crying and leaves, I'm about to cry from frustration, my neighbors are about to call the cops.

Now I have a pissed off GF (ex I imagine, ah well), a car that won't start, and the fkng bolt down the filler neck.

I imagine I can get this out by dropping the pan? heh will it hurt anything down there? (LOL J/K). WTF do I do?

And on another note, any clues why the car won't start? it was running fine, but leaking fuel, so thats when I tore into it. I am sure everything is back together correctly, did I maybe not prime it enough?

Any advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated. I'll also accept a small amount of ridicule for being such an idiot. Thanks..

Dude...congrats on bitching out the female!! They sure know when to pick a fight over nothing don't they!

As for the bolt, have you tried using one of those magnets on the end of a wand? Mkoch1 did the same thing and he was able to get it out with that method. Definitely don't start the car(I'm sure you know that)

Sorry, but I dont' have a clue as to why it doesn't start. Whatever it is, it's probably right under your nose. Good luck

For the gf I might recommend a visit from Mr. Smith and Mr. Wesson.

Blame her for making you drop the bolt and make her fish it out. Works every time. She'll feel much better when she finds it. Just don't coach her HOW to do it or I'll come there and kick your ***.

Have a beer, and put some NEW spark plugs in when you go to fire her up. She'll belch a lot of smoke (the car, not the gf) but should be OK within a few minutes.

You might want to alert the neighbors so they don't call 911. For the car and the gf.

As far a dropping something down the oil filler tube, just forget about it. All that it did or can harm is your pride.

The rotary pan area is not opened to any moving parts like with a 4 cycle engine, except the very front where the oil pump is. The chance of it getting up there when the pan is full of oil is next to impossible.

Not worth the trouble to get it out.

I think you should try to get that bolt out with the magnet thing, or try to push it over to the drain plug. Oh wait a sec, you might have a good chance of getting it out by taking off the oil level sensor. just a few ideas. I havent the slightest idea why you can't get it to start. have a beer and convince her to give you a blow job while you think of a way to slove your problems.

I agree with Matt. Your best luck would be to remove the oil level sensor and fish it out that way. The FD oil pan is almost completely covered on top by oil pan baffles.

if u pulled a plug and it was soaked in fuel, it is probably likely that you somehow flooded the engine, but u were still getting spark so I dont think the plug was fouled, but yeah I think a new set of plugs will be good!

so if you don't removed it - what are the chances it *at least* clogs the oil drain?

Secondly, regardless it would annoy the f*ck out of me.

Thirdly, my wife and I have a very clear signal as to whether or not she is welcome while I work on the car - you should try it --- LEAVE!!! The meaning is very clear. You stop whatever you are saying in midsyllable if needed and get out otherwise I will not claim any responsibility for what happens next. Not to say my wife isn't cool - its just that when you are trying to get to a bolt/whatever and you break the damn thing off b/c of not concentrating/etc. you really don't want someone to ask "is everything ok?", etc., etc. Now if she was bitching- I don't know what I'd do.

If you can't get a magnetic pickup into the tube and find the bolt, perhaps you can get another powerful magnet under the oil pan to drag the bolt to the drain plug and out?

You should get that out of there before you start the car.

There is a slight possibility that the bolt may come up enough to come in contact with the chain, that may not be too good.

^^im with him, dont try to start the car until you get that bolt out, you may start the flow of oil and pull/push the bolt to somewhere with tragic results

The oil pickup tube has a screen on it, the bolt can't get sucked up into the oil pump.

Put the filler neck back on. have her put her mouth on it and suck the bolt out. Have her do it soon cause if you marry her she'll never do it again.

I think it would be a hell of a jump, but the washer/bolt could still interfere with the chain.

A VERY CLEVER IDEA, even if you could not get it out through the drain plug hole, you would at least know where it is, and I don't think it would hurt a thing residing at the bottom of the pan for life. You could always retrieve it when you re-seal your leaky oil pan, and eventually just about all of them do...I would bet if you drained all the oil first you might even be able to hear it scraping along the bottom of the pan by keeping the magnet just off the metal as you dragged it along toward the drain hole. I would pad the end of the magnet with couple of layers of terry towel - just enough so that you would not confuse the scraping of the magnet along the bottom of the pan with (hopefully) the sound of the bolt.

You can buy a really powerful magnet at just about any hardware store.

Damn BLKTOPTRVL, that's a brilliant idea....

One more thought, you could always try groping around from the top with a spring loaded "claw" type parts retriever. It has four tangs that extend from the body and can literally grab a part. You'll need one fairly long and of good quality. Don't buy a cheapy since the gripping mechanism will probably suck.

It's worth a shot since the odds are it is right at the bottom of the tube and has not moved. I would do this very gently so that you can "feel" if you have a good grip on it before pulling it up. If you bobble it on the way up you may lose it completely.

I think that's a picture of one at the beginning of the post available from Sears, not a magnetic pickup.

You can get a 23" long 2 claw pick up tool from www.snapon.com. Most of the ones I've seen are not this long and I think you'll need the length.

Happy fishing!

no luck yet

I got the tool from sears, Pretty cool.. it fits way down there and fishes around nicely, but no luck so far, im gonna try trimming back the sheild a little tomorrow to expose more magnet..

Unfortunately I was in a crunch to get the car going by this weekend, so it looks like I may have to tuck my tail between my legs and send the car to RRR for some help if I don't get it by tomorrow night. I don't feel comfortable just leaving it in there.. the way my luck is, Ill be that one in a million guy and itll destroy the motor. Maybe I can get the pity labor rate

Thanks for all the suggestions, I am going to drain the oil tomorrow and try through the oil sender, but if I cant get it Ill have to take it in to Nick and the boys. Heh maybe they can get it running, too!
