Well it depends what they include as a basic rebuild. Also, are they taking your engine out?

Try Pineapple racing lots of experience down there and they use all new parts.

that is really bizarre. kd's prices have always been fair to me. what exactly is being done? are you reusing parts or all new or what?

i told him i have a blown coolant seal

i then said "the price typically will be around $2400-$3000, right?"

and he said "i wish, parts have doubled in price since 3 years"

Rebuilds, depending on what parts are needed, can get pricing. 6k though, find out what they are replacing. Sometimes shops will replace motomounts, vacuum line, coolant lines, etc. Plus you may need new rotor housings; this is over a grand alone.

I just quoted a customer about 5k for a rebuild including a wire harness, rotor housings, all vacuum lines, plastic vacuum reservoirs, motor mounts, turbo parts.

This is not a bad price either we are not making a bunch of profit on the parts.

So unless this company is replacing a good part of your long block assembly I would think 6k is way too much.

**** that. You are getting screwed. You didnt take it to them did you? Rotary ressurection, rx7store, anywhere else. I could see if EVERYTHING in the engine was new, porting, upgraded seals/gaskets, dowl pinned, lightweight rotors(balanced), ect.... Then i could see 6k for it. But just for a basic rebuild is retarded.

You people really have no clue.

$6k for a rebuild using new housings and full R+R (including replacing all the lines, hoses, and other things) is most certainly not a rip-off.

Hell, a fricking reman motor costs $2400 without any labor or any new supporting parts.

People that don't know better should just stay quiet instead of spouting off....

Hey, I disagree. I bought my FD last year. The PO had a rebuild done by KDR. It was $6965.68 for the bill. Sound like too much? Not really. Here's what was included in that price:
93 reman engine
93-95 engine gasket replacement set
four coolant hoses
oil filter
oil
antifreeze
injector seals
spark plugs
remove/reinstall engine (remember this includes all accessories)
pulsation dampner
turbo gaskets
solenoid
left motor mount
all new vacuum lines (silicon)
plug wires
fuel line
silicone turbo hose
wiring harness
used battery box

And good advice (which the owner did not take) on other things that the car needed.
$1456 for the labor to pull and reinstall the engine.

The reman engine was $2850.
By the way, Dave at KDR really impressed me with his knowledge, and the fact he actually called me back. I would not hesitate to have him do work for me in the future.

You get what you pay for. In this case, you are paying for someone's expertise to pull and reinstall your engine.

Caveat Emptor

I do this for a living, I own Arizona Rotary Rockets and Work for Paul Yaw. I have been around, I know that 6k for a basic rebuild is pricy. I do however feel that this not what they are quoting. They are removing and installing plus most likley replacing a lot of parts to make sure they are covered and the engine runs like it should once back in the car. If this is the case 6k is a competiive price.

$6,000 is easy for a shortblock rebuild when you get into performance.

I just did one for $8000.
And I'm in the middle of two that are $5000+
Yesterday I saw a 1st gen that had a motor by pinneapple, $9500...

Start getting tricky with custom shafts, aluminum sideplates, lightened rotors, dry sumps and you can get to $20k in a heartbeat...

And a few months ago you thought buying a $2k custom e-shaft was a worthy investment.

Knowing it was KD, I made the leap and assumed the $6k price did indeed include all of those things, as it should from any reputable shop IMO.

Yea, on my car, the wiring harness and labor to install was $1050 alone.
