My take! The last Cosmo was way ahead of its time with tech. Can't wait to see what Mazda has up its sleeve with a new Luxury Rotary Coupe. This thing needs to dog fight with the CTS-V's, AMG's, and M5's at a much lower weight and price. It could be the performance luxury bargain of the century. Mazda needs a premium high-profile luxury product. Hopefully this is it! The 7 can follow shortly afterwards.

I know Mazda can nail the driving experience and their current look is great IMO but can they do luxury? I think the nicest Mazda I've been in was a 6 over 10 years ago so I have zero personal experience lol.

the JC cosmo, was really a tour de force, it was the first car with satellite navigation. it also had an available cellphone, with controls on the steering wheel, so it was hands free. it also had the radio, and climate control buttons on the steering wheel.

it is also all on a CAN network.

its all common stuff now, but the last Cosmo came out in 1989.

this is in addition to the twin sequential turbos, mufflers with an ecu actuated bypass (quiet and loud), its got ABS, the rear headrests fold flat when not in use, leather power seats (on the upper models), etc etc

suspension is double wishbone front, and the rear is a trailing arm with two lateral links, its like an FD in concept, but looks like a bridge.

etc etc

Whatever vehicle it was, it's nothing compared to what Mazda is doing now. Have you not been inside the 2016 Mazda 6? It has an interior on par with 50k sedans. Mazda currently has Italians designing the interiors so, the Cosmo/Rx9 will be in great hands.

Also look at the interior of Koeru concept! Even though it's a concept, the interior has a very finished production ready appearance (as it's not so artsy). I think this concept is the next Cx7 (based on the wheel base). Numbers wise, Cx7 is more upscale than the Mazda 6 so the interior should have more of a luxury tone.

I'm hoping that is an artists rendering based off the revealed rear/roof line.

Because it looks a little... ugly to me.

But it would be a good Cosmo if they were taking inspiration from the JC Cosmo and not the Cosmo Sport...

That image is nothing more than a rendering. I read somewhere that they basically took Mazda's front end design language and applied it to the front end. We should find out next wednesday.

I hope you are right. At a glance, that rendering has waaaayyy too much Chrysler Crossfire in it.

One more article: Mazda's Tokyo concept has rotary power and could preview new RX-9 coupe | Auto Express

At a dinner prior to the show, head of research and development Kiyoshi Fujiwara told Auto Express: “We want to return the rotary engine to the market some day soon. It’s our heart and soul.

“In 2017 it is the 50th anniversary of the Cosmo Sports (Mazda’s first production car with a rotary engine). Therefore we want to announce something in 2017 – and not a concept car.”

And the concept is said to hint strongly at what might be expected from a production car. Fujiwara explained that: “The concept car is not completely [the look of the production car], but some visions of it is in it.”

Although no technical data is available for the engine that will appear in the concept yet, it is understood it will be a pure rotary, with no electric assistance, as has been speculated. But Fujiwara says advances in technology will allow for superior efficiency – always a big criticism of rotary power.

He continued: “We realise the fundamental structural problem of the rotary, but recently new materials have been developed and also some measuring, sensing, technology has been updated. We can analyse the combustion in the engine by computer. That can help.”

“Hybrid is one future possibility for rotary engines but at first we have to show the rotary engine itself to the fans. Two years ago we showed a kind of usage of the rotary as a range extender, but many of the fans complained.

“They said firstly you have to develop a car itself with a rotary engine. [After that], then I can expand some of the business for rotary engines – that is the request from the fans.”
