Looks like we've found the next Einstein! What good is a pretty face when you've got a torn aorta? You deserve the Darwin award...

An airbag doesn't just make a crash more comfortable, people. It increases the time of your deceleration from the speed at impact. This spreads the force out over a longer period of time, which causes less damage to your organs and bones. With a seat belt, you're going fast and then you stop.

I posted this in the other thread: Airbags weren't mandatory in the US until 1998. It is illegal to remove the airbags on cars 1998 or newer.

IMO, I wouldn't remove it unless you have a real reason to do it. I'm removing mine because my knees are into it when I'm on the track. If my car were only a street car, I wouldn't change it out as I wouldn't be driving that aggressive.

While a deployed airbag may not make you "look pretty" for a while; it much better than what the alternative could be..

What steering wheel is this?

And Mahjik, isn't it illegal to tamper with safety equipment and emissions equipment?

Only on what is mandatory. There are certain emission requirements which are mandatory to be satisfied to pass DOT (to be legal to import/sell in the USA). So in federal law wise (as I understand it) any changes to the airflow system are illegal. The airbags were not mandatory from 93-95. In that sense, its just like an added car option (i.e. removing the rear windshield wiper).

However, motor vehicle related situations, states basically choose what they care to enforce (i.e. some states don't care about emissions, some do).

And indeed, some states selectively enforce certain things, and even may set standards beyond that of the federal standards. For example, until recently, removing the airbag from a pre '98 vehicle was illegal in VA. But now, they've revised the law, and it's LEGAL provided the airbag light isn't on (lol don't ask me why that helps the situation any).

Interesting since I just removed my airbag (well, it blew and I didn't get a new one more like). So that begs the question, how do I prove the current law if challenged by an inspection station? Guess I'll have to find a way to disable that light too. I unplugged the SRS computer to stop it from flashing but now it just comes on solid :P

Dude you didn't need remove the SRS computer; that just controls the airbag deployment and the 5 beeps for when the airbag is missing/nonfunctional. All you have to do is pull the airbag indicator light from behind the airbag lens in the dash. Problem solved

Oh and ask this guy for more info: https://www.rx7club.com/showpost.php...6&postcount=14

Moreover, there is NOTHING in neither the Virginia Motor Vehicle Code (http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp...10000000000000) nor the Virginia Safety Inspection Program regulations (http://www.vsp.state.va.us/Safety.sh...pectionProgram) that says you fail w/o an airbag. You CAN, however, fail for warning lights in the dash being on
