My Problem With Electronic Boost Controllers

Due to my engine mods, I have had problems with EBCs being slow at controlling boost. Resulting in high initial over boost.

It started when I rebuilt my modified engine in 1990 running Pettit modified stock twins in non-seq mode and the Apexi PFC.
I installed the Blitz SBC and experienced high initial over boost. Gain better control by moving the boost source after the IC instead of the turbos outlet. But still had the problem.
After reading up on the system, I converted it to the DSBC which mostly solved the problem. It ran 2 solenoids in parallel installed inside one plastic box.

Used this same EBC when converting to a single turbo back in 2005. But in the winter of 2020 the Blitz died. Replaced it with the TurboSmart E-Boost Street.
I picked it due to it having more functional ability than the Blitz which was no longer available.

But it had the same problem as the Blitz. I tried hooking it up using both the top and side WG ports, only the side port, and different boost sources.
Remembering the DSBC, I purchased a spare Turbosmart solenoid and made my own dual setup. I am currently tuning it now with much improved results.
The small single solenoids just do not flow enough for very fast rising boost peaking around 4000 rpm.

See attached picture.

kind of surprised that you didn’t put 90°s on those other two connections and just Y them together like the other one, except they would be offset slightly from that one due to their offset position.

Do to space problems where it is mounted to the firewall behind the UIM.

The technology has come a long way since 2005. Have you considered upgrading your setup to run an electronic boost controller? My Haltech runs all of my boost settings via a boost control solenoid valve.

Fun fact, Chuck was one of the first adopters of the power FC. He pioneered a lot of the information we still use today. His tuning notes have been used by hundreds if not thousands of people on the subject.
Anywho he is using a EBC but was experiencing what I’m assuming is a orifice size / cubic volume issue for his particular set up, which he solved by putting another solenoid valve in parallel. The power fc boost control is far from being as refined as a haltech but it does seem to work. I use it on both my single snail and sequential’s car with great success. This thread has a lot of info on the subject … https://www.rx7club.com/single-turbo...ispreloading=1 Most people do seem to put an external one on for more flexibility when not using a modern ecu

Chuck, could you post the combinations settings you’re using currently with that setup? Would be helpful for future reference on setups that are experiencing the same issues. Hope all's well!

This cold weather is messing with my tuning. My ecu is the PFC, but the EBC is a Turbo Smart E-Boost Street.
lI runs two boost settings, mine are : 12+ psi for normal use and 18+ for warp speed. The 12 psi is very close, just need to fine tune the sensitivity value. Only made one run with 18 psi.
Have to wait for warmer weather which will take a while to get back in the low 60s. But Houston can change in just one day.

The 35 series Mac valves are great for this purpose. Great flow and reaction times. I've been building a new solenoid solution for my car using 35's for Pre and WG control and stackable 37's on a custom manifold for the rest.
