Cars in 2021 to replace the FD
And our FDs have shared parts with Ford probes and other cars.
Idk why everyone is so worked up about the BMW aspect. Several cars has Yamaha engines. Mclaren F1 had Mercedes engine. Audi's R8 similar to Lambo Huracan (ok same parent company). Mitsubishi partnered countless times with Chrysler (stealth/3000GT, talon/eclipse). For ranger = Mazda b2000.
Why do people act like the Supra/bmw is some unholy craziness?

Probably because Supra was at the pinnacle of the badass 90s JDM bubble cars, so that is the association in our minds.
When Toyota sells us a BMW called a Supra, it makes us feel like they just used the Supra name to sell some cars.
Which they did, cause thats Toyotas job.

The MKIV was a showcase of what Toyota was able to make. It is their most iconic sports car. Supra is a household name.
Instead of carrying on that legacy, they wrote a check and had BMW build it instead.

Pretty sure the new Z had something to do with the manual incoming on the A90, much less the new comp motor to up it another notch.
For a powerhouse company, Toyota dropped the ball for their flagship icon re-intro and trying to profit of the badge for a car not all in house built. The roots, heart and the almighty soul just not there as they delivered in the past. Sad. (I'm a bit biased perhaps currently owning 2 A80's for 2 decades but as a car enthusiast in general)

"Manufactures can partner and part swap to their heart's content for 99% of their models. Colin Chapman using Renault power in the Europa? Brilliant! Honda and GM playing footsie under the table with different powertrains from the 90's all the way through today? Great! Toyota and Subaru blessing us with the BRZ/FRS twins? What a time to be alive!
All of that changes if we're talking a halo car, one that should act as a showcase of technology and aspirations for the brand. Using another manufacturer's technology and swapping out body panels is stage whispering to the market that your brand is a fraud at worst and adrift at best."
just a joke, but also a mic drop...
I don't get the double standard. 86 is in the same boat and no one seems to care in the least. BMW makes absolutely fantastic sports cars and inline 6 engines. So stop complaining and just be happy that companies are still making fun cars, especially if you haven't driven the car out on track yourself. You all sound like a bunch of old farts stuck in the past.
Has anyone complaining about the new Supra actually driven one? I found it quite nice. I'll take another FD before I buy one, but it is a good car and also very easy to make big power out of. I wish they would do a targa top version like the MK4, then I would buy one.
Not sure Toyotas reputation has been sullied in the least when they have already sold 3.5x more MK5, than MK4's entire production run. (US sales only)
And this kind of thing happens ALL the time in development. It's called RDDP, Toyota will go to an outside company requesting development of a part that will meet their design standards. The outside company will then produce the part and then get approval from Toyota that it meets design intent. The MK5 meets all the design requirements that Toyota set out for, it just happens to be that BMW is the manufacturer. Toyota is a company after all, if it makes business sense they will do it, not if the fan boys are happy with them.

In all transparency, I do. I'm in their quality organization, but work closely with design. Everyone can have their own opinion, it's just that most immediately goes to 'ITS A BMW', but have no understanding on how car development works. Would it have been nice that the whole vehicle was produced by Toyota, yeah you bet yuh, but that shouldn't take anything away from it.
Same goes for any allegation about the manual transmission. Toyota didn't just do it because of the Z, it would have been apart of the vehicle life cycle plan from the beginning.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s a fantastic GT car. Not in the category of sports car but definitely a grand tourer. I see it for those people who don’t really know about vehicles but don’t mind being seen in something “fancy”
Perfect example is my neighbour. He’s very much a Honda guy. Hell, he has a mint CRX that he thinks is the best thing ever built. He enjoyed it so much, he picked up another one. He doesn’t have a clue how it all works underneath, but he enjoys it for what it is. He’s about late 50’s if not early 60’s. He’s going to get rid of 1 of his CRX’s to get an LC. We were talking over the upcoming season and he spilled how he’s been trying to find one and can’t because the dealers don’t stock it. I simply explained how the people around here either buy something German or Italian. The amount of super cars and great grand tourers in my area is ridiculous. For the amount of money Lexus is asking for their LC, people just flock to the competition.
hopefully he’s able to find a dealer that’ll get him one.
Im glad the Supra exists and think its awesome that others like the way it looks and enjoy it.
To me, its like Toyota did a poor job changing the looks of a BMW in order to "brand it" as a Toyota Supra.
What I mean is, terrible cabin buffeting with a window down, terrible visibility in all directions, fake vents that cannot be used everywhere and a BMW interior design (why change outside design so drastically to brand and leave the interior obviously another brand?).
I love the look of the rear and rear 3/4 of the Supra and want so badly to like the rest but it just looks like a ***** with many piercings to me.
In comparison a similarly priced M2 Competition is a real fully developed car with more practicality, better performance, better options (auto, DTC, manual) and to me- better looks.

2.) I think you missed the point why so many are disappointed with this product and I'm positive plenty of lay people are familiar with outsourcing. The Supra has been a poor rebranding if anything imo and I think it ultimately boils down to a level of 'purity' that consumers are willing to accept. If I may, it's not unlike how modern musical instrument company's like Fender, etc will outsource certain production lines to India, Indonesia, Pakistan, etc (you get the point) but is then marketed as 'designed in the USA' or 'assembled in USA.' The term 'you get what you pay for' has never rang more true today. I personally have no problem paying a premium for what I want and that is not Toyota made by BMW.
There's a big ole discussion on R&T about the new trans, etc and how the 6spd is sourced from BMW as well.
TLDR- outsourcing is bad

No matter how nice it is mechanically, and I'm sure it is, I'm sorry, it's not nice looking.
The show car (which I thought wasn't exactly a classic, but very cool) appeared to be a much rangier car, longer nose, wide, excellent proportions—like it would be on the footprint of a Corvette or Aston Martin, and not that of a BRZ or 370Z. This thing looks like the plush toy version. It's short and squat, and not athletic or sleek looking at all, and all the crazy styling looks affected. Sorry, that's a lot of words for ugly.
But yeah, borrowing an engine, or other major components is one thing. Body-kitting a whole car is sort of weak.

The buffeting issue is the one thing that driver me the craziest, because its still not fixed. During evaluation, did no one drive past 55mph? I don't get it.

To simplify my original statement, just because it says Toyota, doesn't mean it was designed by Toyota. So it's up to each person to figure out where they draw the line.
Just put my deposit on a GR86 MT Steel Premium trim today. Perfect compliment to my FD.
Really freaking excited, should be here end of June/first week of July since it's being built straight in Japan before it's shipped right to the local Toyota dealership. Can't wait.

I love the FD interior design, it just had a few weak spots in consteuction that Mazda or the aftermarket has fixed.
In contrast I hate the RX-8 interior design, but it has good materials and superbly assembled.

Haha. I love the FD interior. Lots of others at the time made cockpit style interiors, I feel like the FD looks the best. But agree, broken tabs all over the place and peeling 93 texture sucks.
Agreed, the FD interior is BEAUTIFUL imo. It just falls apart a bit easier, the latter era FD's fixed a lot of that imo. The textured interior I think looked cleaner over time too.
