Mr2- A miata hatch would be an interesting product to execute; I imagine much like a FD with the hatch. I'd personally love to see something like another 323 GT-X made for today's market given how there's so much interest in / media push towards 'off-road' or 'adventure' capable vehicles. I DD'd a '88 for years and it was a serious hoot driving around town. Especially after storms when my buddy and I would go run around local backroads / trails. The only reason I eventually sold it was because parts are literally non-existent. The interior was everything 80's awesome, the seats in particular.
Natey- Funny you mention toasters, I recently heard someone else compare the character of modern vehicles to appliances. I personally really like the '22 Mazda3 turbo hatch (jdm = fastback) and imo, it's one of the few products mazda has produced in many years that has stirred any kind enthusiasm with me for the brand. And I couldn't agree more with you on how new cars travel at ridiculous speeds like nothing is happening.
ND is a great car in so many ways but my honest vote would be for the new GR FRS. After hearing about the solid dyno numbers in addition to physically seeing one in person the other day, I think they're a very cool car. Not only does it have a 'presence' that the ND does not (imo), this is also just the beginning for a new chassis and was built to a very respectable benchmark right out of the gate.
my idea was a Cx3 SP, lower it (just a tad), bigger tires, and either the ND engine or the 2.5*, Mazda's response was the discontinue the Cx3 in the US....
*the 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5 engines have different blocks. so they are more like the 12A/13B than like a 305/350 Chevy.
The ND was designed for the 1.5 and the 2.0 is kind of shoe horned in, and the 2.5 would be through the hood, Cx3 is probably like that too
Edit, the 6 cylinder has been confirmed, and if its based on the 2 liter, it would be a 3.0, if they used the 2.5 it would be 3.75L...
j9FD- I like that idea! Imo, probably would've faired well in today's market given proper ground clearance and adequate power. I personally really liked the CX3 and actually seriously considered picking one up when new but ultimately came to the conclusion that it was too small for my needs at the time.
HiWire- Woah! I haven't thought about the 929 / millennia in a long time and come to think of it, I haven't seen one in years.
To my knowledge, the current 'spec miata' Roelbling track record is 1:21.9.
A gr86 forum member just ran a 1:21.7 with a bone stock '22 gr86 the other day (brake pads and fluid too!). Sporting 225 series A052's and supposedly his 1st track day in the car.

When you say spec miata, are you talking about the mx5 cup car or just the regular production street vehicle?
No doubt the stock 2022 GR86 is a great car for the money.
Oh wow, didn't really see the GR86. 2.4L instead of the 2.0.
Finding the perfect compliment to the FD is going to be tough, a lot of good competitors are coming out before the inevitable killing of all fun cars lol
Jatt- Yeah the new engine is a big step above the 2.0. There's a guy online who bought one and dyno'd it to surprising results; puts down very respectable power for what it is imo.
so there are two solutions for that. the first is that its not a car, its a quad,
Citroen just came out with Ami, which has 4 wheels, but isn't a car. https://www.citroen.co.uk/models/future-models/ami.html
its not meant to be fun or sporty, but it does neatly get around the pesky rules. its kind of like how Uber is a tech company and not an internet dispatched taxi....
Second, you buy a new old car. this has been brewing for a while, but the light bulb kind of went on when Jaguar decided to finish the production run of D types.
Jaguar had a list of D types they were going to build in 1957, but the factory burned half way through. in 2017 they just decided to finish the production run.
also you've been able to buy a new MGB body shell for 30 years, and there are Camaro and Mustangs and Chargers and stuff available too.
I highly recommend an A90 Supra. Catless DP and a tune and you're in the 500whp range, the TQ numbers are crazy and the car weighs around 3300lbs.. it's been an amazing daily for me and it whoops on Hellcats and many other cars that try me on the highway. The BMW jokes are super old and don't bother me since I was deciding between the Supra and an M2.. you won't be disappointed with choosing a Supra or M2. The market is kind of crazy right now but I bought mine used with 9k miles for $47k.

Looks great, how does it sound with the catless DP?

For me, it can't be a replacement for the FD without a manual trans.

As soon as I fix the coolant leak on my Macan turbo its getting traded in on a black A90.
