The FD is actually a bit more of a GT car than people think or you feel comfortable going very fast and that's also why neither the miata or the BRZ will compare. I think the cayman is the closest you can get at this time.

Yep, and the weight distribution is a little better on the miata. I also suspect if you modded each car the miata would come out on top. Weight is a really big thing when it comes to boosting power, handling etc....

We dont have to wonder what car would be faster if each was modded because in Japan they are still modding and racing the FD as well as the new cars.
The FD is still on top.
This may have a lot more to do with the passion it inspires in those modifying and racing it than the actual mechanical platform though.

So today the shipping company is picking up the new Miata from the dealership in Colorado. Hopefully I'll have it within a week. Is it as fast as a stock FD? No, but that's not really the point. I'll drive it on the same backroads as my FD, just like I did with my 2002 Miata. If I could get a new, warrantied modern manual trans Rx-7 with current price levels ($45-$55k) I probably would.

It's a high 11 second car 1/4 mile car (I think online I've seen time slips of about 11.8@117), and it gets about 100 miles per gallon equivalent, plus I often charge it for free at work. Up to about 80mph you'd be hard pressed to beat it in a straight line with most ICE cars, so that scratches the itch. If I had $120k, I'd get new Model S plaid, which is like an 1100whp 9 second car.
I can put my two year old in either the Mustang or the Model 3. The Mx-5 is for cruising around with the top down.

I've never been a fan of Porsche and actually the opposite for many years but I'm not quite sure why this vehicle went under most people's radar. This machine is serious and I wish I knew it was being made because I would've purchased one instead on building my rx8.

Unless you are a repeat Porsche customer, you will not be easily be able to get an allocation for a GT Porsche.
But yes, the GT4RS would be an amazing drivers car.

Jason Cammisa did a review of an earlier Cayman with a built 911 engine, revised gearing, etc built by a shop that offers the entire conversion turnkey. It would end up much cheaper than the new car, and you can get one without an allocation.
I did consider picking up a used '16 GT4 Cayman and having Sharkwerks do their transmission gearing swap / upgrade, etc. since they are local to me. The part prices are very reasonable / comparable imo and I'm basically paying similar labor rates for my mazda performance services. Which was a hard pill for me to swallow; especially when everyone holds this false prejudice that 'German cars are expensive to own brah!' Not so true today and importing parts plus coordinating with multiple shops is a serious undertaking with various degrees of success.
I also very much appreciate the spirit behind the Guntherwerks 400r. I personally wish more mazda enthusiasts outside of Japan built their cars to this level of refinement and sophistication. It's my unofficial duty to be the spoke's person of 'nice mazdas' and the new GT4RS appears to be a wondrous machine.

I keep looking at modern brand new cars for my second car I’m going to get to compliment my FD and always keep going back to wanting a Porsche 996 turbo. Am I wrong in wanting a nice arctic silver low mileage one? I need to find one to test drive…

Like you I was looking at a 2016 GT4, couldn't find one I wanted and ended up with a 2019 911 GTS pdk.
Still enjoy driving the RX-7 and am set on pouring $$$ into it.
A Cayman drives more like the RX-7, light on its feet. But the 911 is not too shabby.
If I had the garage space would want a MT Cayman, GT4 please.

Am I they only person who see's this car for what it is...a rebadged Infiniti with new sheet metal? Nissan has lost it's way, and I refuse to take part in that non-sense. Everyone is jumping up and down, cheering and whatnot for that old car from the worst (2nd worst to Mitsubishi actually because they use Nissan drivetrains now

^ Glad this was posted. All the GMA T.33 vids dropped today and the car is absolutely stunning. Actually reminds me of the FD in a way, lightweight (way lighter than the FD actually), clean design, uncluttered.
Almost all newer cars are butt-ugly now because they have to comply with California's ridiculous road safety compliance that changes every year (might just be a federal compliance, and not California).
