Atomic Rex style electric assist power steering

Anyone make an electric assist kit for the fd3s that doesn't have the motor at the rack but rather on the column?

So I can be of no assistance to you, but I do have to ask....any particular reason why you'd want to convert the PS to electric?

The Atomic Rex is a manual rack. So basically you are adding electric power assist to an aftermarket manual rack instead of keeping the awesome feeling, original, speed-sensitive, stock hydraulic belt powered pump and rack & pinion.

Personally, I like the simplicity, reliability and feel of the OEM setup

I believe a few members are running this kit. I do not have any first-hand experience with it tho. https://epowersteering.com/purchase/product/rx7-fd

it has a lot of advantages if all the technology is applied properly, no different than a DBW throttle body, advanced CAN-based ecu, highly efficient single turbo, 17” and larger dia. wheels/tires, and so on …

but there’s probably a few people on here who think nothing about getting out of bed to drudge out to an uninsulated outhouse at 2 AM in below 0°F weather to take a dump like a bear in the woods.

honestly though; in addition to preferring the convenience of indoor plumbing, based on my EPS experience in the RX8 I really wouldn’t want to go back to a hydraulic ps system any more than the simplicity of a Model T buggy or a horse-drawn carriage for transportation.

You know, every time I see you post...I don't care where it is or what's being discussed, I click to read because I'm either gna learn something or, more often or not, I'm going to laugh my *** off. You have a point, but I'm also in tears trying to keep my laughter quiet while my supervisor (also a RX7 nut) is bent over right beside me laughing uncontrollably. With your permission, I'd like to use said comment in my signature .

I have the original Atomic Rex manual rack and have just about finished installing the epowersteering.com power assist. The motor powers the steering column via gears on their modified column that mate with gears on a small electric motor that fits under the dash. I have not experience with how it will work,. but have a friend with the exact same setup and he loves it. You can dial in as much assist as you want from a little to a lot. I am going to turn it on and off via settings on my Motec ECU, but it has its own controller.
