AEM wideband install help

Just picked up an AEM wideband and need help installing it. Going with a power fc tweak and looking to do some self tuning. I’m pumped.

First, I am going to install the bung right near the downpipe / midpipe flange but on the midpipe side. Is this ok or too far back?

assuming it’s ok where can I run the wire to get in to the interior of the car. I’ve seen a post that you can run it through the shifter opening. Is that correct and the best way to go?

any other things I should be aware of ? Please don’t hesitate to chime in. I imagine I need to keep the wire away from the heat of the exhaust as best as possible. Anything else I should be aware of?

I am going to mount the gauge on the steering column. Is the Pettit steering column mount my best bet? Just concerned with it bc it’s designed for a 2 inch gauge and this is 2 1/16th. So looking for other option.

anyways. Been a long time since I posted. Hoping to bump into some old heads if still around.

Most people typically put it in the downpipe just before the mid pipe flange. But if it's slightly further back that's fine. You can wrap blue tape around the downpipe or mid pipe about where you want it, get a Sharpie, and mark where you want it to be. In many cases you can't have it totally straight up, it may have to be leaned over a few degrees. You do want it on the top side of the pipe.

I PM'd you about the wire running.

Pettit pod would work. It had one for a while and it didn't really pop in, just kind of sat there. I eventually got a gauge band type holder, worked great. Something like this -

Just have the OEM pod with the wideband on that holder and double-side taped to the top.

Drakes has some nice double gauge pods that go in the center speaker hole. I think there may be others out there, not sure what all else you have -

I think the booklet that comes with the AEM gauge has the bung mounted at 9:00 o'clock on the the downpipe, but an angle (18 degrees?).

That is to prevent moisture accumulating in the bung and burning out the sensor.

In any event, expect the sensor to burn out fairly often, so you want it in an accessible location.

I have also had the Intermediate harness between the sensor pigtail and the gauge fail. And the gauge fail. It was a puzzle as to which was failing each time.

People have used a sensor from a vw/audi spec, which fails more quickly. so watch out for that recommendation.

Oddly, I have been able to buy the AEM gauge kit, several times, for the same price as just for the sensor.

There are also sensors on Ebay for, like, $30. These fail very quickly.

I have my gauge mounted in a pod on the A pillar at eye level. I don't have to look at it directly to have a sense of what it is indicating.

I am rhd, so the harness runs up quite conveniently on the firewall (engine bay side) and through an opening. Although the route is shorter for my RHD, the AEM intermediate harness comes with a a good length of wire.

@matty rather than making my own thread, figured I'd bump this one.

Did you ever get that bung mounted up?

I'm also planning on mounting mine on the midpipe side, need to take it in to my fabricator buddy this week so I can (hopefully) get my FC Tweak setup going before the really cold weather hits and the hooptie gets parked for the season.

Wondering if you took any pics of the process and so on.
