Wideband Setup

Hi guys,

sorry know this has been covered before and is a very noob question, but this is one aspect of modifying cars I would like to learn more about and get my head around;

"Wideband Install"

I have ordered a Wideband (MTX-L) from mazking.com

I now understand that I need to install this 18"+ from the turbos in the downpipe, rather then the original o2 sensor bung as its too close to the turbo heat & this will be a permanent install.

So in future, lets say a friends car we wanted to check the AFR's with the Wideband, how is plugged in if he doesn't have the extra bung like %90 of cars........

I heard of many people doing road tunes for people with LC-1 and MTX how are they using the wideband as these people don't have the 2nd bung in the exhaust? or are they using an extension/connector for the tail pipe?

thanks

Many modern cars have an after-cat O2 sensor already. But, most of us RX-7 guys just have a second bung welded in at the bottom of the downpipe and have a wideband O2 sensor permanently installed.

Used to be you'd move your wideband from car to car to tune it or whatever. That's back when a wideband cost $1000. You can now get widebands for under $200 - there's no real good reason to move it from car to car. Just permanently install it in your car and be done. If your friends want a wideband, tell them to save their pennies and buy one.

Hey Dale thanks for the reply. That makes sense.

I still am curious tho, how to people who offer road tuning use a wideband on a rx7 that doesn't have a bung, I believe they use the LM/LC1 etc, is it possible to temp mount these?? Or do they use it in a different way. As I understand a few people do road tunes over here for people.

IMO that is kind of a trivial question and nothing more than an extra point for your post count as it isn't always necessary to have a wideband bung installed to be able to record or monitor AFR'S. @ OP - Some shops that offer dyno services will also offer to "rent" or "borrow" the use of a wideband and in fact place it at the exhaust tip like you said. But as far as I know this is only effective if THERE ARE NO CATS INSTALLED or in the case you are able to plug into a wideband bung that was previously installed but unused. I'm not sure how much of a difference a sensor would read if placed in the optimal/recommended distance from the block vs at the exhaust tip as this information would serve me no use lol. No negativity in my post, just trying to help!

Thanks bud...... Yes I am leaning towards a different type of wideband is required, I would be keen to know what type they use. And yes I know for a fact the cars didn't have the extra bung :-) not as many people in aus run widebands as the states but it is starting to become more popular ;-)
