Question Yet Another Synthetic Oil Question...

Okay guys, i have been hearing a lot of debates about mineral vs. synthetic. Let just say that I know the arguments for both cases.

Here is the question for those that run synthetic oil: what brand do you use? Of all the posts, I don't think anyone posted what brand they used. Mobil 1, Castrol, Penzoil, Amsoil, Royal Purple, etc? Or do syn. blends work just as good? Or better yet, what brand of synthetic burns the cleanest (least residue)?

Thanks in advance,

Jay

i believe that amsoil is the cleanest burning. that seems to be what most rx-7 shops have used for a very long time. lately some of them have been switching over to royal purple though

I use Mobil 1 10W30 in my car right now. If you're going to spend the extra money go with the full synthetic. waynespeed did a test of some mineral oils and Mobil 1 by holding them in a spoon over a flame, and Mobil 1 burned cleaner than the mineral oils.

If you ever decide to yank your oil metering pump and run premix you should definitely use synthetic. I like it alot.

If I were to spend the money on synthetic oil I would go with Royal Purple. It is the only oil that Ive ever seen proven to add a couple hp. Did you read what RB had to say about synthetics?

I would try out Royal Purple, but Mobil 1 is easier to get.

I used to use Mobil 1 in my 88 non-turbo.

I can't say I had a problem with it...though the damn car never passed inspection for the 3 years I owned it. but for what it's worth, it's 4 years after I sold it, and the car is still running...

I have tried Castrol, Redline, Valvoline and Mobil 1 synthetics in my race car and found that the Mobil 1 ran the lowest oil temps. I found Mobil 1 to be about 20-30*F lower than all others. redline being a little less than 20 and Castrol being a little more than 30. so I use 0-30 with outside temps below 80*F and 15-50 over 80*F. I have torn down two motors and all internal parts were as clean as the day they were installed. I don't use the OMP, but I do use synthetic premix(Motul 800) at 100-1. I have been around alot of Mazda race cars and almost all of them have been using one synthetic oil or another and some are using the stock OMP. And I have never even heard of a failure that could be linked to synthetic oil being used instead of mineral based oil. Mobil 1 also seems the easiest to find and the least expensive when compared to Redline, Royal Purple, and Amsoil.

Mobile One and Royal Purple have the lowest ash content and lowest flash point (right around 580F) of the synthetics.

If I was gonna use a synthetic, one of those two would be what I would use.

Thanks guys. I guess my next oil change will be w/ Mobil 1. I would try Royal Purple but the NAPA near my house charges almost $8 a quart. That's about twice the price of Mobil 1. Again, thanks, the advice helped alot.

I have used AMSOIL for many years, and have lately been trading off between Mobil 1 and Castrol, depending on whose got 20W-50. Tried Royal Purple once.

All I'll say about synths is that AMSOIL was selling synth before anyone else even knew what it was. They are the pioneers and have been perfecting it for 20+ years. That means more to me than brand name and marketing hype. Downside is you really do have to make an effort to purchase it. If you can't find it at a performance shop, yu need to look up a private dealer. Unfortunately I've gotten lazy lately and have just been getting the easiest thing I can lay hands on.
