Question Would you save this water pump?

So, I'm pulling my front cover to replace my leaking gasket, and when I pulled of my water pump, I find this.

Now. I'm thinking this isn't worth saving, but maybe I'm over reacting. The car has NO overheating problems, and runs very cool.

My other concern, is is this normal? Do I have another concern causing this internal mess?

Obligatory naked engine shot!

flush your radiator and clean off the pump. if you didn't have any problems before, then what is assuming that you are having problems now?

yea run the prestone coolant flush to rid the system of any debris and put a new seal on that water pump after wire brushed and should be good to go..

I'm not assuming I'm going to have a problem, I'm just making sure. I'm also curious what causes this. I want to make sure it's not a sign of a failure somewhere else in the cooling system.

I think it's just from debris and junk in the radiator, mine looked like that last time I had it off as well; I attributed it to the naturally corrosive nature of the coolant / water / other crap in there to pitting the metal. Like todd said, just get a wire brush and clean it up, and you should be fine

Probably the main causes are not changing the coolent enough and using regular tap water instead of de-ionized water.

As long the bering still spins freely there shouldn't be any reason the pump isn't still good. Give it a good cleaning and flush the system for sure.

That's what I think I'm going to do. A new pump is only 50-60 dollars with a new gasket.

Of course now I can't separate the front cover from the power steering/AC bracket.

Looks like the metal is corroded. Keep up on the quality of the coolant. Neglected coolant can easily lead to a blown out coolant seal from rusted side irons.
