Would this setup work you think?

Would there be any benefit or drawbacks if I get this rigged like this? I'm really just trying to clean up the engine bay..

BTW, not without the fan shroud, without the intake setup...fan shroud attached..

What exactly are you looking at??

If your talking about the cone filter on the end of the air flow meter, I don't really see any big benefit by removing the air duct. Your filter element is just farther away from the cool air, in fact you will be placing it directly above the exhaust manifold and running engine.

You'll just be sucking in hot air instead of near ambient, I even keep the mazda fresh air scoop and use it to deposit cold air right onto my filter element in my GXL:

to each their own though right?

What did you do with your air pump lines? Are they filtered or are they nixed?

They are fitted. The K&N has fittings for all of the lines unlike "e-bay" filters.

Your engine bay looks fine the way it is, and you don't want to start doing stuff just for the looks anyway, thats not how rx7's work. good luck and keep us posted.

How about this, my car keeps shutting off when it is getting warmed up and I get out and slap the AFM and it starts right up...when I took it off to make sure it wasn't sticking from some debris or something I hear something rattling around when I turned it..If this goes out completely will it damage my ECU? and- anyone have a cheap AFM that works? Thanks!

Uh huh.

That stock Mazda intake piece is not depositing a single molecule of "cold air"- or even warm air- to your cone filter.

The only reason the stock airbox gets air through that intake snorkel is because it's the only place the engine can pull from...emphasis on "pull". Without the suction of the intake tract there is no reason for air to flow through that snorkel- it does not terminate in a high pressure area nor is there low pressure at the other end, so air has no incentive to wend it's way through there.

well, i never really gave it that much thought and it seemed to make sense at the time, my thought was that it starts at the front of the car and might be exposed to rushing air while driving 60mph down the road. I didn't see it being all that restrictive, especially restrictive enough to keep out every molecule of air in its path.

Still it can't hurt even if it doesn't work.
I haven't driven the GXL in three years though.

Anyhow, as far as the op is concerned, if you want to run it like that go right ahead. I just didn't see anything wrong with running it my way. And personally, when I run my GXL again, I will make a cold air box for the K&N.
