worst door locks ever?!?!

The other day I locked my keys in the car. I was at the beach and at least a 45 min. drive to get spare keys. So I decide to try the screw driver/nail file on the little 1 and a half inch swiss army pocket knife that I happen to keep on me. Stick it in the key hole, turn it, and low and behold! The door unlocks! At first I thought whoa...that rules....for future reference I can always use the screwdriver to open the door. I managed to lock my keys in the car again. I dunno...just pure stupidity. I didn't have the pocket knife so I tried my house key. MY FRICKIN HOUSE KEY!!!! And the door unlocks. This unsettles me as to how easily my car can be broken into. Not that there is anything of value inside of it usually, but still. You guys should try it if you have a FC N/A base model. Or even better than base. I am curious if this is a real problem with all 2nd gens.

Do you lift the door handle as you close the door? DO you have power locks? I found out that you have to lock the door, then hold the handle up as you close the door to get it to lock. Try that.

no I know how to lock the car. And since I have a base model, I don't have power locks. I was told to get new locks. But that's more money...that isn't going to mods.

What good will the money for mods do if you dont have a car to mod after someone steals it?

So do both at the same time: One of my mods.

Buy a shaved door handle kit, and use the remote to open your doors. I left the door handle still connected, but if you disconnected the door handle, the would be no point to locking the car.

Mod: Your doors pop open at the push of a button.

Fix: If you disconnect the door handle, no theif can open the car.

As for the problem, its common to ALL cars of the 80's. Try some Fox body mustangs with a dipstick... many will open. Chryslers are ever worse, many of their cars a mere five years old can have that done to them.

Really, stealing a car isn't about how hard it is to get into the car. Any joe blow can break a window. Its about getting the car started. Buy a club, or wire in a fuel cut switch. Maybe buy an alarm... relying on simply the door locks to protect you car is stupid. Without protection, locked or not, if a thief wants your car, he'll take it. Its that simple.

I think if a thief is determined to get into your car, it doesnt matter if your locks are working properly or not.

try walking up to other FC's. your key will probably open 90% of them even start a few.

last meet here in Vancouver he walked around a tryed a few and freaked a couple people out who owned them .

My driver side one was replaced cause it broke so it's ok. I have probably opened the pass one like 20 times LOL so it's still like brand new. 15 of those times were when the driver side was broken

This problem is often just caused by dirty key barrels. After 10-15 years crap builds up inside them, wedging the tumblers up in their slots. The more tumblers that are stuck, the more likely it is that a similar key will open the lock.
Squirt liberal amounts of spray lubricant into the lock and then work the key in and out 10-20 times to move everything around. You’ll see lots of black crap on the key. Wipe and repeat if you want.
I’ve seen this work myself on a mate’s car, where both my key and his father’s key would unlock his car (we all had early Toyotas). After this treatment, only his key worked. This works for the ignition barrel as well.

Just dont use WD40 on it! I'm am not saying this from an personal know-how...but i remember reading a thread about how WD40 kills the silicone that is used in many automotive applications as a lubricant. It has some chemical that counteracts the lube chemical. The thread is somewhere in the forum.
