Wont start dont know why, please help

Forum,
As you can all can probly tell im a first time poster but long time reader, so i know the rules. I need some help, ill explain what happned and what iv done to try and fix it. Ok, so i got of work last night, went out to my car, started it, it died right away. So yeah i try again, nothing. So i figure its flooded, I couldent remember the correct procedure, so today I went up to my work, and put new plugs in it, still nothing. its getting gas, I can smell it, and its getting spark, checked that (ouch) it has compression (well alot of air coming from the holes. and i dont know what wrong, when I turn it over it turns over really fast, but its still cranking the engine. I figure, it has spark, fuel, and i dont know how it couldent get air, so whats wrong. Help, i need to drive. And i missed the first rainy day today! thanks alot for any help. Adam Its an 87 'se' with with 114,000

I had that same problem you did. Got new plugs, wires, fuel filter, the basics. Plugs were incredibly fouled. After all that I suspected it was the fuel itself(I had just filled up at a "Mom & Pop" place) and their low quality gas wouldn't burn in my car. I had to drain the whole tank in a parking garage under my work, go get some premium from a Conoco, pour in what was in the gas can, then it started right up. Smoked like a bitch for about 5 minutes though.

Could be what happened with yours, but most likely wasn't...

Pull each bottom plug and pour about an ounce of oil into each chamber. Now rotate the enigne by hand a few times. Put another ounce of oil in, put the plugs back in, and try to start the engine. Most likely the excess gas has wiped the chambers clean of oil so the compression at low RPMs are too low to allow it to start. Adding the oil will help it build compression. Once it gets running, hold it about 1000 RPM for about 10 seconds then slowly let out the throttle. If it wants to die, give it another 1000 RPM for 10 seconds...The car will smoke heavily during this procedure, so be ready for some odd looks.

can someone add this to the FAQ?
Searching on this forum is a bit crappy due to a lot of "beginner" questions with no real answers other than "search!" or "read the faq"
and this is just what i have searched for..

agreed, although i would alter his post somewhat a say putting in ATF like Ice Mark had me do, it did the trick although i cant say it worked better then regular oil it seemed to be alot thicker which would lead me to beleave better compression, and easyer starting. Good Stuff!

dont forget to replace your spark plugs if you use oil or atf, both will fowl them out.
