Question Wiring Diagram??????

I need to hook up the wiring for my brother's 89 engine. I looked at the wiring diagram and I'm lost. Anyone have any advice on how I can get started?

Well this is how it happened. My brother bought a 89 engine off ebay and dropped it into his 88. It turns out his pulsation dampener was faulty (which I hear is often the case) and fire broke out on its maiden voyage. He ordered a new wiring harness, which got fried, and started to assemble it. Then he went off to Iraq, he's a paratrooper.

Anyway, long story short, I'm looking at Chilton's Mazda 1989 RX-7 repair manual, (plus the manual I found at iluvmyrx7.com <-- I hope I can say that in this forum) I had to replace the oil lubrication system and most of the vaccum hosing. Now I'm staring at this wiring diagram and I have no clue where to begin.

Any help would be appreciated.

I feel your pain- I've been an aircraft electrician for 19 years now and the diagrams in the FSM are amateurish, to say the least...what you need to do is take the first two diagrams, which contain the power supply systems & fuse branches, and match the power source "numbers" that are present at the tops of the remainder of the diagrams...it helps if you write in the fuse name, amperage, and power source (battery, ignition switch, etc...) next to all the BS little number codes...and just "pretend" that all the wiring that goes down to the line at the bottom of the diagram is a chassis ground...they put numbers for those, too, to denote locations on the chassis...good luck, there are lots of guys on this forum that know what they're doing with this car's wiring, they'll help you out...

I just did this swap but the opposite way, s4 to s5. I dont know all the specifics like what year harness you have, like the post above said. But i kept my s4 ecu since it was a TII and matched up the wires from the s5 to the harness on the s4 and spliced and connected them. It was either that or take the whole interior harness out and that looked like a whole lot of trouble. From my experience and from the thought of others on this forum you should just stick to your series.

s4 (1986-1987) will have a mechanical oil pump. and the s5 (1989-1991) will have a electric oil pump.

Do you know where the Oil Metering Pump (OMP) is?

The mechanical will have a rod goint to the throtle body, and the electrical will have an electric harness.

Can you also read the numbers on the ECU for us please. so we know what you're dealing with.

The ECU's been hooked up already, and I'll look at it when I get home.

Mine has a rod going thru it. I removed it because I'm now switching to premix ^^

I need to know the basic path the wireing harness takes, There are a few brackets but sometimes it doesnt seem to fit.

Do you still need to know the ECU number if it has already been hooked up?
