Question Wiper Switch and all functions on it not working

I have a 88 turbo 2 with a problem wiper switch functions.Well it has been acting up recently for the past month or so. Every once in a while it would not work nothing not the wipers hazards or the rear wiper. So i would hit it a few times turn the car on and off and it would misteriously start working when it wanted to. Then last week i switched the dash out for a black dash and checked the connector and everything seemed fine so i put it all back and it worked for a couple days and now it wont work at all, once again no wipers, no fluid, no hazards, and no rear wipers. My turn signals and everything else works and checked the fuse and replaced it any way and still does not work. Also tried another switch that was known to work and it does nothing like the other one. I know it is connected because when you have the headlights on and press the button for fluid the lights inside the car dim. Kinda confused and it is raining out and need to drive my car i thought it was the switch but guess not. Anybodys help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Sounds to me like you may have lost the ground connection to the dash. If you know what you're doin electrically you can bypass the switch & hot up the switch functions manually. You'll need the wiring diagram for the plug & a test lead to jump from the hot lead to the individual wires that go to the wipers, spritzer, etc. Don't do this unless you know how!! If you can hot up the individual functions then the problem is the switch, they are famous for cold solder joints that cause intermittent shorts. If you get non-function when you hot up the individual leads the problem is probably harness related. Go to the FC3 archive they tell you how to repair the cold solder joints in the switch.

Sounds like an idea I did already try another switch it is just weird everything is out. I did see the grounds on the back of the dash and they looked good. If all else fails i pull the dash out again and fool with it. Untill then i am going to drive my cavalier and hope for good weather.

The ground(s) for the wiper motor/switch, are/is ground number 6. Ground number six is located in the FRONT harness and located below the Trail Coil assy in a six socket plug. All wires colored BLACK in that plug.

What you do is this. You get a piece of electrical wire a foot or two in length. You bare each end of that wire. You shove one end of that wire up the back of the WIPER MOTOR CONNECTOR. To be specific, you shove it up the back of either the Blue/White or the Blue/Red wire in that electrical pulg. You then turn the key to ON, motor OFF. Now touch the OTHER end of that wire to a good ground point.

When you did that the wiper motor started moving, proving the motor is good and the problem is wiper switch related. You can also take your meter and put it to the BLACK wire of the switches plug and see if that wire is a good ground or not using the meter. If the motor did not run, then the FUSE is NOT good.

No meter and you want to prove that gnd in the SWITCH is good or not? Get a piece of wire and bare each end. Key to ON. With the switches elect plug connected, you shove one end of the new wire up the back of the BLACK wire in the connector and then the other end of the new wire up the back of the blue/red OR the blue/white wire in the switches plug. The wiper motor now moves, proving beyond doubt that the SWITCH is kaput.

The wipers working sometimes and not other times, is symtomatic of a ignition switch problem. Try running the wipers. If they don't work, then fiddle with the ignition switch, by lightly turning it a touch one way then the other.

Wish you'd tried the wiggle the key in the ignition before doing your dash change out. It really sounded like a igntion switch prior to the dash change out.

Yo HAILERS, you are the man. It was the ignition switch. It worked after i jiggled it so i took it apart and cleaned it out and works great. Thanks again.
