Windshield Anntenna

Yeah so i was cleaning my car today. mind you i've had my car for alittle over 2 years. i spent 6 HOURS! cleaning and detailing my car today and i noticed for the first time EVER that i have a windsheild antenna. does anyone else have one? i know the Convertables have them, but i didnt know coupes have them. i own a 86' Gxl. but it's more like a base now with all the crap i've removed from it

I thought they all had them. It's the "FM diversity" system that was part of the stock stereo. It would use whichever antenna had the strongest signal.

Unforunately the winscreen antenna is useless without the stock stereo, as it requires complex electronics to make it work. Wiring both antennae in parallel doesn't work, for reasons that would take too long to explain.

Only the upper market FCs came with them, you won;'t find it on the base, or other non power models (like the sport).

I had it on my 87 TII, you can use the antenna from the windsheidl instead of the rear antenna. It worked great in San Francisco, i had just as good reception as i did with the rear antenna.

I have yet to see a stock FC windsheild without the anernna. Many people replaced the windsheild without it. My 86 base has it. That brochure is wrong!

Ditto. I disconnected my motor for the rear antenna and can still pick up every station except those in the very low FM band.

#1 Most people that replace the windsheild replace it with Tinted glass. The tinted glass has the antenna.

#2 most people that think they have a 86 or 87 base really don't, but have a 86-87 luxury coupe. Remember both the base and luxury coupe came with 4 lug wheels, but no power windows. If the car has a sunroof then it is a luxury coupe as that was an option, but the base never had the sunroof option.

Yup, my 96 Base edit *I meant luxury coupe* has it, and I run the window antenna (which works great if you power the internal amplifier...), my power antenna was broken and has since been disconnected, and will be glassed over when I do the repaint this fall.

Ice,
well, if the chart is accurate, why did my 86 *luxury coupe* come with the theft deterent system w/ alarm? Somthing aint right. Usually they publish those before the car is released and they are never accurate. For example I can go to my local Mazda dealership today and get the RX-8 brochure (which I did) and in fine print it says (SUBJECT TO CHANGE WITH OUT NOTICE). They do that for a reason. They never release the car exaclty like the pre-sales flyer. Can anyone on this forum state for sure that they bought their 86-88 from the dealer (no resale) without the antenna?

You guys are awesome. I was just thinking about what to do with my busted antenna. I am going to plug the hole tonight and not ever worry about again.
Anybody have the weight save from removing a power antenna?

Yeah, I bought my 87 sport brand new from the dealer back in 87 without the antenna or tinted glass,*edit Whoops I mean without tinted sunsheild windsheild* so I happen to know as a fact and without any doubts

The factory alarm, much like the cruise control was also available as a dealer option. I had cruise installed on my Sport (I traded the dealer the sucky stock radio for it, when I bought my car).

Its easy to see if you really have a luxury, do you have power mirrors???

Base models and Sports came with manual mirrors.

My mistake, when calling it tinted glass I meant what Mazda called the Tinted Winsheild Sunshade.

Why are you being a dick on this??? don't want to believe what car you have, or that you are proven wrong...

Here I will even give you the part numbers:

Mazda:
Tinted W/O sunshade and W/O antenna: FB01-63-901C
Tinted W/ Sunshade and W/ antenna: FB03-63-901E

NAGS (aftermarket North American Glass Standards):
Tinted W/O sunshade
W/O antenna: TFW521
W/ antenna: TFW522

Tinted W/ Sunshade
W/antenna: TFW523
Not available with sunshade and no antenna.

what are you upset that you are not old enough to buy your car when it was new and know its entire history, or that you thought you had a model that is something else???

The antenna motor weighs a few pounds. Nothing to get excited about but every little bit adds up.

Easy Iceman. By the way, why do you call yourself Icemark? I am just a perfectionist. I guess, I learned that trait in law school. I got the car when it was new. I also have the window sticker and sales receipt. I hope it didnt take too long to look up those part numbers. Good job on clearing up this all improtant antenna question. If I only had the knowledge you have.......

In high school (more than a couple years before Top Gun), I actually did have the nick name of iceman, because of my last name. well when I was going online back in the early 90's, Iceman was already taken at the ISP I was using. So the next logical name was Icemark, using parts of my first and last names.

Wow.. that's crazy thread digression!

Anyways... I have the window antenna in my 90 GXL... and my power antenna doesn't work (motor decided to take caffiene and stay on one day)
Is the window antenna alrady plumbed into the antenna socket connector in the dash or is it a seperate wire?
I'd like to remove my antenna completely and just use the window one....

Two seperate wires that go to two seperate plugs on the head unit. The main antenna has a male plug (like most cars) but the windscreen antenna has a female plug. I presume Mazda had a reason for not wanting them swapped over. This will obviously make it difficult to use the windscreen antenna on an aftermarket deck, which all come with female sockets.

Bah! I made a male/male connector out of the old plugs on the back of the factory deck. If you have internal speaker amps (as MOST of them seem to) and you power them with your power antenna lead on an aftermarket deck, then you also power the power antenna lead (which is electronically amped). I run the glass antenna, and it works excellent, picked up a local FM station 75 miles from the tower... My rear antenna hole is getting glassed over this weekend....

Blaupunkt actually has a new line of Skyline receivers that have dual FM tuners, which could make use of both antennas. I've read reviews on them and they're excellent sounding units with great FM reception.

I think the units are the Skyline San Francisco (CD only), and San Diego (CD/MP3 playback). The San Francisco has the option of turning its internal amp off and costs about $549.99.
