Windsheild wipers turning on with ignition...??

Hey guys,

My wipers are turning on when my ignition is in the ON position....

I have no clue what is going on.. I checked all my fuses and they are all good.

Electrical experts please.

Have you tested the wiper unit against the FSM? Does it make any difference when you try to change speeds? I'm thinking it could be either a relay that won't switch off, or maybe it has something to do with the **** itself.

Interesting you should ask.. It DOES not make any differance when i change the speeds...

I just had a look in the FSM about testing the switch.. not too sure how to do all that. I know how to check continuity, but not sure about what they are trying to achieve with the battery testing stuff.

Mine did that. It is was a problem with one of the relay was fusing or getting stuck somehow. Pulling the fuse didn't turn them off either, I do not know why (yes it was the right fuse). After I took the switch out and took the relay covers off and fiddled with it, it stopped running non-stop but then did not work correctly. I am going to order some new relays but I have been putting it off be cause I will need some parts to fix my Flasher CPU.

You might be able to get it to stop with out replacing the relays by mine got messed up in the tinkering process.

I have a 1991 convertible.

I'm not sure what you mean by the battery part, but all you have to do is connect the shown terminals to negative and positive terminals of the battery respectively. Only then can you actually test the switch by checking for continuity when pressing certain buttons of the switch.

Pull the plug off the wiper motor. Ohm out the blue/red and then the blue/white wires on the connector. The one that shows ground, is the one that is causing the problem.

Most likely a stuck relay internal to the wiper switch causing the dead short or gnd. Remove the wiper switch plug and see if the ground went away on the wire that was showing a gnd.

Frankly it's just a bad wiper switch that needs its relay replaced. Just pull the plug off the wiper motor til you get a new/rebuilt switch.

Relay in the wiper switch for sure. Get a new switch or if your good with electronics you could put a new relay in the switch.

This could also be caused by a relay in the wiper motor proper.
I had this problem when I washed my car.
I sealed the wiper motor with some paint and the problem is now gone on my car.

The info on the internal relay is from IceMark.
