Will this micrometer set work for a rebuild?
Will this micrometer set work for a rebuild?
I'm trying to find a used set of 0-4 inch micrometers for an upcoming engine rebuild project. I'm searching ebay because I can't afford new tools. Would a set like this one work well?

If you know any machinists/millwrights/etc, I'd ask them first...they usually have top of the line ****, and they get it all calibrated every so often. You'll also need a dial indicator to check for side housing warpage. A vernier caliper would also help, so yeah, borrow if you can. You'd be surprised how many loaner tools for the weekend a case of beer will get ya
Im sure those micrometers would suffice, but I'd be leary of used ones...drop em once and they'll be off a bit.

That set is overkill if you're just going to use it for a rebuild. A micrometer that measures at least 85mm or about 4 in. is more than enough. You don't need a dial indicator. Use a straight edge and feeler gauge for the side housings.

You will need a dial indicator to set the e-shaft free play.

A dial indicator with a magnetic base is used to set the ecentric shaft end play. Also a dial indicator is used to chech the side housings for wear were the oil control rings glide over the housing.
i say buy them they are a very good set of mic's and if i had 70 dollars i would definalty buy them. you never know when you can use a micrometer. yep definatly need a magnetic base and a dial indicator to.
