Question why woud it do this to me?!?!?!

the car is an 88 se with 99,00 orig miles. it satrts and runs. than when you hit the gas it rolls up to 3,000-3,500 rpm, than looses power. if you feather the gas after that point you can get it to go up to about 5,500 to 6,000. what would cause it to do this. any help is appreciated. thanx

Is this in nuetral, just revving the engine, or is this driving on the road?

well, if it's idling O.K., then the compression ought to be sufficient. I just ran into a whole bunch of fuel delivery problems on my '88, too (albeit with 180,000 on the car), first and foremost, check the easy stuff- inlet & hi pressure filters, maybe check the cat after that (when my cat clogged, she wouldn't rev beyond 4,000)
