starter

working on a 83 limited starter woudnt turn just punch. took it off dry tested it worked fine re hooker it all up woudnt turn took the - whire off and presto turns over .why woud that be? whats the ground on the starter relay for if i dont have it hooked up and it works? had the car jacked up woud crank put it back on the ground it woud click jack it up a bit woud crank im baffled .put it in gear and creeped it forwerd under starter power and al the sudden it wants to work right but i still left the - off the starteris it just a 2nd ground as the trans is ground .whats it there fore?

Run a wire from solenoid to battery. If it cranks, then its your ignition switch. Report back

the ground from bat to fender goes to sylinoid. i put it in gear and moved it 2 feet and it works now but i dont have the ground on the sylinoid just wondering if it needs to b have to de gum the carb now no fuel pumping out wen i hit the pedal can poor gas in it and keep it runin have it in pieces now lotsa lil jet holes to cleani reckon the acc pump dioframs not doin mutch wen pedel is pushed maby itl run on its own wen i get it all cleaned out
