what makes a TII trans different than a N/A trans structurally. like harder syncros and gears or something?

The case is not the only difference.
Yes, the case is stronger.
The input and counter shafts are larger diameter.
The gears are stronger and wider.
Check the Mazda OEM part numbers - they are difference from NA to turbo transmissions.

They could be had for around $200-350 if you look hard enough.

Try looking for trannys for other brand cars. They are twice as much as the T2 trannys. FC lovers god it good and they just don't know it.

Contact SDRotary(or something like that). He always seems to have J-specs and t2 trannys in stock.

I can't believe anyone would complain about paying $200-$400 for a tranny. $200 is cheaper than the new driveshaft I put in my 87 N/A!

SDrotary_FC...I'll probably be contacting you soon for a TII tranny. You know how much shipping to VA would be?
