why the dash of 89+ weight more?

does anyone know why or what makes the dash of 89+ Rx7 weight more than 86-88? I been told 89+'s dash weight 30 lbs more. I don't like the idea of extra weight so high up front.
thanks

Ben L

The drivers side sub frame is oval tubed, (instead of stamped steel of the 86-88) and there is a lower brace between the center console and passengers side that was not there on the pre-88 models.

The upper assembly also is slightly different with modifications to support an airbag assembly. (Mazda was orginally gonna put in the airbag on all 89 and later models to meet the Fed passive restraint requirements, but then put mouse belts in instead on the coupes to save cost).

The center console subframe also got some minor modifications but, nothing that I can see that would add too much weight.

Is that why we have more leg room on the 86-88 than 89-91?

Also the carpetuing seems to be thicker

Carpeting actually got thicker/nicer in 88.

The doors internal sheet metal also got revised in 88, but externally you couldn't tell... you would have to pull a door panel to see.

There shouldn't be any differnence in leg room except on the passengers side if you had an auto tranny.

Mark,
does that mean the 89+ are stiffer at the front end than 86/87? if it does do, I don't mind it at all, I think a FC needs all the stiffness it can offers.
I believed 89 GTUs should be a contender in the SCCA SoloII C-Stock class. it is my goal to prove that GTUs can take on N/a MR2s and 924s.
thanks Mark.
