who has changed their sunroof "skin"?
Mine has some rust bubbles so I take it its not repairable. So how much work is it to change just the top part? Never really looked into it too much. Oh and what causes rust to form there? Does some water get trapped under there or something? Mine doesn't leak.

OBEY YOUR MAZDA
Sorry beats me, mine does it too so im looking for a fiberglass or carbonfiber one.
Maybe it could be that the paintjab had a crack so that water and dirt could work their magic

It's pretty easy to replace; just open the sunroof up so you can get to the front of the headliner piece of the sunroof, and pull down. It'll pop off because its held on by plastic clips, so be gentle as to not break them. Then, just unbolt the sunroof from the assembly. If you need more help let me know.

I can explain why it rusts. It rusts because its basically floating(not attached directly to the chassis) not grounded. Make it easier for it to rust. Im not sure why but thats what I have been told.

The only thing you have to take off is the inside panel of the sunroof, you do that by openning the sunroof and thanpulling down carefully on the front of it and than sliding it out, than underneath of that is 4 nuts that you unscrew and than you can pull off the outer skin, you do not need to remove the headliner to do it so you shouldn't even see the bolts that attach the whole sunroof assembly to the car.

I think the rusting has more or less to do with bird dropping sitting there for weeks, and the fact that the 15yo molding can not seal out the water as good as before, furthur promoting rust.

it takes 2 mins to change. pop the roof open like 2 inchs. pull down on the front of the roof panel (carpet part). it'll pop down. the back part slides out. it's a little tricky to get the carpet part out as it's bigger then the hole. once that is gone you will see 6 10mm nuts on the bottom. undo them and the roof will just lift straight up.

I have an 88 GTU with sunroof that had the same problem. Replacing the sunroof panel is very easy. Simply open the sunroof, pull down the inner panel from the front, close the sunroof panel and remove six 10MM nuts.
You will have to realign the height of assembly itself to match the level of the new panel with the roof, so you'll have to remove the upper interior trim to do it. There's a full procedure in the FSM, under the "Body" section.

The sunroof rusts, because it is not grounded. The new one will rust also, if you don't ground it.
Same is true for the hatch.. it is not grounded and rusts...

Does anyone know where I can find replacement parts for the two plastic pieces that retain the wind deflector of the sunroof to the body of the main roof. All the RX-7 2nd gen. that I have seen have these pieces broken, most likely because of the excessive pressure put by the lift-up springs. I would be looking for metal ones that can stand this pressure.
Thank's.
