Who can do a tune up?
I'm looking for a shop that can tune up my RX-7 and idk if a tune up for a rotary is any different from a piston car but i just want to make sure and what would the average price of a tune up be? Anyone know a good place in New Jersey?
depends on what needs tuning up.
a major service like a 90k if the car has never had it can run in excess of $350-500. which involves replacing the plug wires, spark plugs, oil, oil filter, coolant, transmission fluid, differential fluid, fuel filter, decarbonizing the engine, adjust TPS and timing and general vehicle inspection.
that's about 4 hours of labor plus parts.
and MOST of the cars on this forum have never had most of that done, including the ones who will give you advice that it is a rip off and a tune up just consists of spark plugs and oil change.
the cooling system is the most important thing to service so at least make sure that has been flushed out in the past year or so.
yes, most of it is easy to perform on an FC.

Yeah, this. I just started on Lucy and the outpour looked like sewage slurry. I'm probably going to do another flush in a month after the new antifreeze loosens the internal rust.

dont take this the wrong way but if you need someone to tune your RX7 you may want to think about selling it, these cars require little simple things to keep them going and if you cant do these yourself you will not enjoy the car as much.
real simple tools needed and you will get a better understanding of your vehicle and pride in ownership.
I aint saying to remove and rebuild the motor, but routine maintenance you should learn about , this will also educate you for the rest of your life regardless of what car you own in the future

owning an rx7 is a way of life. I'm on my 2nd one (regret selling my first... alot). but its just like anything else in life, alot work gives you alota love... yes i love my rx7
and anyone here that denies loving theirs too is lying, an rx7 is more costly to have then a woman.

Not to pile on, but if you just don't want to do the work yourself, hopefully you at least have a job with lots of disposable income. As far as finding a shop in your area, I would check your regional forum.
not everyone works on their own car as if that is the only way to enjoy it, i know plenty of people who have nice cars and still enjoy them while only doing minor things to it themselves.
some people simply can afford to pay a mechanic to service their car, there is nothing wrong with that.

Indeed. Nothing wrong with that, car work is greasy, bloody, tiring, and often bloody.. XD
Anyway. No idea about shops in NJ, but if you do do your own tune up: you do NOT have to remove the undertray/shield to get to the radiator plug.. There's a little oval plug that lets you get to it ^_^" [I kept taking the whole thing off for the longest time..] Also make sure to get the radiator and engine drains..

there is nothing wrong at all with paying someone to work on your car, but you should, at least once, know your way around your car and perform a routine maintenance on it.
not having the time and not knowing how are 2 totally different things

And don't forget injector cleaning. To do so requires the injectors to be removed and sent to a local injection shop. Most have turnaround of a about a day and it only takes about 20 minutes to access the injectors so if you have having a mechanic perform the service, they'll have the car overnight. This makes a HUGE difference in the way the car performs.
But yeah, any competent mechanic can tune up the car since the fact that it's rotary is incidental.

"Tune up"
A slight aside to the 'do it yourself tune-ups' -- A buddy's mom had a early 1st Gen RX-7, and she drove it like a stereotypical grandma. Periodically it would start running bad and acting up, she'd call him to take it in for a "tune up". Which consisted of him just driving it around at high RPM for a while (something it never got otherwise), hitting the local pub to let some time pass, and driving it back, after which it ran much better and everyone was happy!
