^ And he was a lucky one, the fire was contained to the engine bay.

If it gets beyond a certain point, the entire car is a car-b-que. It's not worth screwing around with.

Also, if you don't already carry one, GET A FIRE EXTINGUISHER! If you can catch the fire early, you can put it out. If you have to run to the closest place that's likely to have one, your car will most likely be toast by the time you get back.

This is also a good argument for a fuel cut switch - if your car catches fire, cut the fuel and run the engine out. You'll have a lot less fuel pressure left in the lines (read, a lot less gas spraying all over).

i caught the fire almost as soon as it started, i was lucky, only injectors, wires, and vac lines for the most part.

Definitely worth fixing early than waiting. Scary images. had a buddy destroy his MX-6 due to an engine fire.

This is why I like these forums. I bought this car on saturday and it reeked like gas. I thought it was running incredibly rich but it was odd cause i saw no smoke or anything. This thread probably saved an 88 vert, and maybe my life!

One question:

Has anyone found somewhere other than an S4 fuel rail to get the banjo bolt, or is that the only option? I have some of my plant suppliers looking for it but it never hurts to ask!

Thanks!

how can you tell if the gas smell is coming from an open exhaust or the PD. i bought my car with open exhaust and just thought that gas smell was from open exhaust, now this makes me worried.... my car gives a hint of gas smell is that normal or does it have to completely reek of gas for me to be worried?

I'm with Bacek on this one...

I don't have the open exhaust, but I do get a slight gas smell from the car.

The Pulsation Damper is less then 15k old, and shold be fine, and I've inspected it both running and off and found no fuel leaking.

I thiink mine may just be some old fuel lines venting gas off, but the smell is very slight, when it's there, and it isn't there very often.

So what's normal? Should you ever smell gas from your RX? anytime you do is it a bad sign?
