It dont have norm/sports shocks switch on console.. it dose have a aluminum hood, it has roll up windows, it dont have a sunroof, and has a basic factory stereo in it. ..aren't these things have packages on them like a turbo car dose???... well another thing i found is, that i found a recipt in the glove box that shows that in 1997, the owner bought some RX-7 wheels out of a salvage yard in North Carolina.. so that mite explain the reason for the other rx whells on it??? what ya think???

But I would get some 16x7 wheels back on it.

Well if you have the money, put humpty back together again. If you need money, part it out. Since it was burried in the mud for over 5 years, it will need some work. One thing is for sure, it is not an investment (rare or not) so if you put a load of money into it, I assure you will never get that money out of it. So rebuild/restore a 13 year old car and drive it for a while or part it and play taps in the background. My .02

nooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
are you really going to part it out?
why not sell it to someone who wants it for the rare car it is? I'm sure there are plenty of people who want to guy a 1990 GTUs that needs to be fixed up.

*yawn* The real deal in second gens was the 87 sport and 88 GTU. S5 cars fail to capture the essence of the RX-7: clean, simple fun. I wanted an S5 until I realized that those mouse belts were for real. Then there is the weight issue and more isolated road feel, not to mention electric MOP which can't be removed entirely. The virtues of S5 cars are their bumper covers, tail lights, rub strips and lighter rotors (maybe the VDI if the engine were to remain on stock ports) . . . all stuff that can be swapped to a lighter s4.
GTUs aura comes from their rarity, not superiority.
Okay, now I am done being opinionated. If you don't part it out I still want the wheels. You want the real GTUs wheels anyhow if you are going to restore it..

Yo,
Dangit 88IntegraLS, you finally made me post in this thread...*grin*
Since you want to compare the early "clean and simple" S4's to the mouse belt laden S5 GTUs, here is what Wozzoom had to say in this thread:
https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showth...hreadid=101848
And he's had both cars:
------------------------------------------------------------------
Are we talking modified or stock here???
Seems like everyone is picking either the S4 base because its the lightest, or the S5 GTUs. Now that I own one of each? The S5 GTUs kicks the S4 base's *** hands down!
I've had my 86 Base for 11 years now. The car was a dog in stock form. (14" rims, weak suspension, single piston brakes) Over the years, I've modified my car to make it better like most people on this list... So what does my 86 have on it now? Turbo Brakes, Turbo Suspension, 4.1 LSD, *Ported 91 NA Engine*, 91 NA Transmission...etc Basicly I converted my 86 into a GTUs! (Minus the 4.3 rear end) I've also done the usual exhaust+header and intake mods.
And now that I've done all this work to my 86, I go out and buy an 89 GTUs. The day after buying the GTUs, I starting kicking myself for not ditching the 86 eleven years ago! In stock form, the GTUs is a better car than my modified 86.
Here's why:
Body: The S5's were stratigicly reinforced to improve body stiffness. The body has less flex than my S4 and feels more secure on the road. I know its heavier, but less flex is a good thing! FYI: My 86 weights in a 2660 lbs, the GTUs is 2710. A TOTAL DIFFERENCE OF 50 LBS!!!
Drive Train: The GTUs recieved the 4.3 LSD in the rear as well as a special set of gears in the transmission. The overall result is the engine is almost always in the power band! 5th gear on the interstate is actually usable as I can now easily acellerate uphils without having to downshift.
Styling: Come on, who on this list prefers the look of the S4 cars over the S5s?
Steering: The GTUs recieved the speed sensitive steering. I was never a fan of power steering b/c my 86 always had a manual rack, but the steering response of the GTUs and overall feel give an incredible feeling for the road. I can toss the GTUs into a corner a lot faster better than my 86.
Engine: 14 more HP and an extra 1000 RPM to redline! Nuff said.
So if you can't tell by now, I love my GTUs. If I could get half of the money that I have invested in my 86 back out it, I'd sell it in a heart beat. If I had to choose my highly modified 86 with thousands of dollars of parts or my 89 GTUs, I'd pick the GTUs.
---------------------------------------------------
There ya go, third party verification that the GTUs /is/ the Ultimate NA!
*wink*

Ha ha, way to go Rarest, uphold the NA pride and represent the GTUs. I'm even trying to get his 4.3 gearbox for my base which will have GXL hubs and vert wheels. One of each NA model, pretty cool eh?

I have an 89 GTU, white with blue interior. it most certainly does have a sunroof. as far as all the other stuff, it looks totally different than the gxl. I have a couple friends that have the gxl's both 88 and 89. when you park them side by side you notice a few small things. the biggest difference is the stock mirrors. I am going outside to take some pics of mine right now!

And the S5 GTU is a different model than a GTUs model that is being talked about in this thread.
