It has the turbo suspension, a 4.33 LSD rearend, and no sunroof. It is the lightest s5 model made. IT has a normal NA transmission, but with a modified 5th gear to help offset the rearend ratio. The wheels are 16" mesh, same as the s5 turbo. The vert wheels are 15".

I would fix it if it were me, but it all depends since I havent seen the car. The rear is worth about $250-300, and the wheels about $200-300 depending on condition. Nothing else about it is really worth any more or less than a regular s5 NA, in parts value anyway. As a whole, the car is slightly more desireable than a regular NA.

They are said to have been a very limited production run, somewhere around 1000-1100. Supposedly in 90 there were less than 100 made, and of those, 10 black ones, from what I have heard. I dont beleive there are any hard facts to support this, and as such they arent worth more on paper than the others.

I would fix it up, and I have also heard that in 1990 the GTUs was VERY VERY rare, especially in black.

I've also heard that Mazda denied making ANY GTUs's in 1990. definetly fix it up. !! how much did/are you paying ?

Gtus

The gtus is a gtu with the turbo2 features ,16"rims, limited-slip diff, turbo rear end, and the 89 gtus was the first model with the front spoiler. I have a red 89 gtus and it runs great.

I wouldn't say "offset". I would say that it has a modified 5th gear ratio that takes better advantage of the 4.3 final drive for decent acceleration in 5th.

No, I think I'm closer. The 4.33 does it's job in the lower gears, but if it were left to it's devices, 5th gear would be rev'd out higher than it is on the other models. They wanted to keep fuel mileage about the same on the open road, so they made a taller 5th gear to offset the lower rearend. So you get the best of both worlds...normal 1-4 gears with the low rearend ratio for acceleration, and a higher 5th gear to offset the effect of said rearend. IF youve ever driven a GTUs, you've no doubt noted the large(r than other NA models') difference between 4th and 5th. I used to have a GTUs, daily drove it for several months.

turbo rear end
That's absolutely and positively INcorrect. Please stop spreading misinformation. IT is a nonturbo diff, same dimensions as all the other nonturbo, it just has a special ring gear inside with teh 4.33 ratio, which not even a turbo had. IT is no different, externally, than a 4.1 LSD or 3.9 LSD from a GXL.

and the 89 gtus was the first model with the front spoiler.
I dont know about that, but it and the 89 turbo II were the first ones to come out with it.

There was no stock factory front spoiler on the GTUs, it used the same front bumper as any other S5, and didn't even come with the S5 Turbo's front spoiler or side aero kit.

And the first FC that came with a front spoiler was the 86-87 Sport which came with the front end aero panels. The 88 T2 and 88 GTU also came with them.

Please do not post if you don't know what you are talking about.

I dont know if it is listed as an optio or anything, but I have seen a couple of original GTUs' with them installed. Whether theyre factory or not cannot be known I guess.

The S5 Turbo front skirt was commonly installed at the dealer, but again, that doesn't mean it came from the factory.

Icemark: I have an 88 GTU and I don't think I have any front spoiler. I'm assuming you mean a front lip spoiler? Here's a pic of my car to be sure.

The 88 GTU was what the 89-90 GTUs model was based on. You could say that the 89-90 GTUs really was the son of the 88 GTU and grandson of the 86-87 Sport/GS.

The 88 GTU (and 86-87 Sport/GS and 88 T2) came with an front aero kit (missing in FCdemon's picture) as well as side sill spoilers (in front of each rear wheel) and a underbody aluminum panel around the tranny, just behind the lower engine cover as well standard GTU rear spoiler (also found on the 88 T2).

The black aero kit/spoilers can be found easily on the red S4 Sport in the below picture:

Compare that to the GXL in the bottom of that picture without the aerokit.

However the 88 GTU should not to be confused with the S5 GTU. The 89-90 GTU was the strippy model based on the 88 SE and 86-87 Luxury coupe with upgraded 5 lug wheels and the simular single piston front brakes found on the S4 base and Luxury models.

Gtus, lol, don't waste your time. You want a Turbo. I would part it out and sell me the rear differential.

They all have a small 3 peice rubber lip under the front spoiler, its the true spoiler that I am taking about:

See the #1 part FC17. That is the true factory front spoiler for the S5. It is painted the same color as the car.

Not the standard black rubber runner three peice that is found on almost every other FC.

I also bought a black 1990 GTUs about a week ago, and only paid $1900 for it. Its got 120k miles on the chassis, 80k on the motor, with a lightweight flywheel and an RB header. No rust on the body, although the clearcoat is peeling on the roof. The interior is in almost perfect condition as well, with the exception of a tear in the drivers side seat. Great car.

That's a steal, DelSlow... You're most certainly positive it's a GTUs right? (Speaks out of jealousy) Icemark, I've always meant to say this before... But when it comes to differentiating each series down to the model type of the 2nd gen, you're a work of art... It's like your major is FC 101.
