whats the diff between street/strip, 4 puck, and 6 puck clutches?

whats the diff between street/strip, 4 puck, and 6 puck clutches?

i have no clue what the differences are here? other than the puck clutches are cheaper than the street/strip. i amlooking on rx7.com at the act clutches, i believe i will purchase one of these, but i dont really know the difference. i drive my car everyday and sometime hard, so which one?

the difference is the disc itself and the materials on it. the street strip is a full disc made for the street and a few drags on the weekend. the 6 puck is still streetable but more for the track. the materials on the 6 puck grab better. the 4 puck is generally a drag clutch with very grabby material on it and is harsh on your drive train. its usually unsprung too which is even worse on the drivetrain. also the 4 puck is an on/off clutch so there is no feathering. you have to get used to it all over. go with the street strip.

Here's your answer-These are not recommended for street driving. You naturally can use them on the strret, but hold on to your driveline! No spring center to absort vibration. I would marcel (material between lining) is non existant. Rough for a daily driver.

RACE READY! Attack the track with the ACT Xtreme Race Disc. Shifting is quick and sure due to the lightweight rigid design. ACT Xtreme Race Discs are available in 4 or 6-pad solid hub design, these pads (pucks, buttons) are highly durable and resistant to heat. Why use an ACT Xtreme Race Disc? The copper ceramic material holds approximately 28% more torque than an organic lining. ACT Copper Ceramic Xtreme Race Discs engage fairly harsh and are not normally recommended for street use. ACT recommends 6-pad ACT Xtreme Race Discs for larger sizes to absorb more heat and for smoother engagement.

Their are several companies out their that are making 6-puck sprung center clutchs you just need to find them. I am running a 6-puck sprung center clucth made by KEP specifically for VW's. If they make it for my car, someone has to be making it for yours.

I have the ACT 4-puck disc. The engagement is a lot harsher. It is possible to feather the clutch with the 4-puck, but it takes a lot of practice. I stall it now and then if I'm not paying attention to what I'm doing.

The 4-puck sucks big time if you have to drive in any sort of traffic. It makes heel-toe amazingly quicker and easier though. I don't drag race my FC, so I don't really do clutch dumps or anything, but I'm sure it'd be a lot quicker there too.

If you drive your car daily, I wouldn't recommend the 4-puck.

did u not read what everybody else has sed about the clutch kits.....i mean from what everybody has sed seems like the act street/strip is best bet.....cuz i do a lot of daily drivin....but also **** around on the streets too....how long does excedy clutch kits cost about with like 50/50 daily drivin/racin???

I had a 4 puck until it busted my differential, now I have street/strip. The 4 puck is so badass on a launch but sucks for everything else.

I was wondering the same thing, I was considerig an ACT. I need a strong clutch for clutch kicks and such while drifting, but i do drive my car on the street alot.

and it cant be good for the drivetrian... ever tried feather one? it is like an impact gun is banging your inputshaft

just because 10 people say something doesnt mean its 100% right! sure act clutches are good, but there are other clutches that are just as good, if not better... centerforce, clutch masters, xtd, exedy..just to name a few! it all comes down to cost.... what do you wanna spend on a clutch... i have a few friends that are running the $200 xtd clutch on 400+hp fc's, and they are holding up fine.... i have the centerforce dual friction clutch kit for my car ...

I've used a variety of clutches, and my favorite so far is the ACT 6-puck unsprung... It's very streetable unless you simply can't drive... Solid diff mounts or a welded brace will help it from putting so much stress on the front diff mount...

I second the centerforce kit. Centerforce is probably the best clutch company out there for our vehicles IMO. I have driven a clutch with a centerforce kit before, The "OEM" replacemnt that just grabs a little better, and it felt beautiful. Once mine starts to burn up (probably this summer the way i drive :P) i plan on getting a centerforce. I have had several referances to them as well, including my mechanic/shop teacher, and he was a mechanic for 8+ years on work trucks up north as well as his race car, which he still races (stock car, in a league faster than cascar). Hope this helps.

i have the xtd 6 puck. pedal feel is stockish. feathering, or slipping that clutch is a no no. "it is like an impact gun is banging your inputshaft" this is a good way of saying it. it kinda feels like wheel hop times 30. BTW i broke my front diff mount less than 4 days after it was broken in.
