Whats the deal with differentials??

So ive been told that if i want an LSD on my 87 base, that i have to get the driveshaft too. but if i just want the LSD can i keep my ring and pinion? or are there differences in that too?

Or are people saying that because there selling the whole thing, case and all and the yolk doesnt fit the n/a driveshaft?

your info would be greatly appreciated..

thanks,

dave

there are na lsd's (some s4 gxl model i believe?) that will bolt right in. if you want the turbo lsd you need a custom driveshaft (if using the na tranny), t2 rear axels and the t2 diff

I could tell your first hand experience. I had an 90 n/a and i decided to upgrade my car from n/a to turbo. I first got an Turbo Trans and then i got the differential. From what i know the driveshaft of the turbo trans is shorter than the n/a so if you were going to get a LSD diff which i think only came with the Turbo or like the the guy said before the other models you might have to modify the drive shaft. I think that for a headahce sake just get a rebuild kit which will cost you just about the same amount of money that will cost you to get the parts and labor and you will have a better bargain but that is something that i learned and what i would do. Consult the FAQ!!

Did my 2nd Gen RX-7 come with a Limited Slip Differential?
Only the following USA model 2nd gen RX-7s had a LSD from the factory:
86-88 GXL
87-91 T2
88 GTU
89-90 GTUs (however not the 89-90 GTU)
It is also rumored that a few rare 91 coupes with both the A (upgraded the interior trim, added a power sunroof, tilt steering wheel, cruise control, and 4 piston front disc brakes and vented single piston rear brakes) and the B package (leather seating, a CD player, and rear cargo cover) came with a LSD, but you should note that Mazda denies that any FC other than the T2 came with a LSD in 91). You can also tell by looking at the differential as there will be a LSD tag on S4 cars with a LSD.

Non US models with LSD info to come

oh, but what im saying is even if i get a turbo lsd wouldnt the ring and pinion still match up?

im talking about pulling my diffs internals and swaping them with the lsd

but the n/a lsd would match up perfect?

you can run a turbo rearend on a na trans, but you'd have to run turbo axles and mazdatrix's custom driveshaft.

I've seen Torsens going for around $800-$1200. I've purchased an NA LSD from a junk yard for $75, but it's so worn that I'll need to change out all the washers to get it to work. Nice thing about the torsen is that you don't need special additives, and you don't have to replace clutches periodically.
