Question What's broke; oil guage or oil pump?

I was trying to fix some electrical troubles this weekend and after about 18 hours of hell I finally fixed it. But now my oil pressure guage is reading nothing, doesn't even budge. I hoping that the guage is not working, and the oil pump is. After driving it home (was working at my grandparents) there was still a full reading on the dip-stick. The car did not go over the half way point on the temp guage, and all of the other guages were still working. At one point I had dissconnected all of the fuses, and none of the guages worked but after reinstalling the fuses they all worked except for the oil pressure guage.

Anybody know how I can check the guage and/or oil pump.

There's a small connector/wire that goes on to the oil sending unit. It just pops on and off. I knocked mine off when working around that area and killed my oil gauge. Check to see that it IS connected.

that is funny, because mine has NEVER worked and all of the sudden oil guage was moving, I was like WTF, it finally works !!

Question: I am using 20W50 oil, once warmed up at idle guage reads 0 p.s.i., at 2kRPMs it reads ~30p.s.i., and at 5k RPMs it reads ~50p.s.i., is that good ? because I assume the manual is talking about 10W30 weight oil....

MaxRX7—Did u reconnect the wire to the sending unit? Is that why it works now?

where exactly is this wire/connector at? I don't know where the oil sender unit is at, but if it is in the hanes manual then I guess that will help.

forget the maunal it sucks for this.

It is a round copper thing right under the oil filter. You will see some wires next to it between it and the firewall/tranny.

THe best way to tell if your guage is not working is to start the car and try to squeeze the oil cooler line. If it's firm, then you have pressure. If it's not, then you may not have a motor for much longer.

The stock oil sending unit and gauge cannot be trusted. Just an opinion, but shared by many. Get an aftermarket gauge. Even if just temp to find out what you really have. The oil line that goes to the rear is connected to the *block* with a banjo bolt. Take that bolt out and drill through the center of it and tap threads that match the aftermarket unit you bought. When you are through you will find that the stock unit and gauge are faulty, most likely to the low side. Mr MAX RX your oil pressure seems real low. I'd do the aftermarket deal above. There is also a good chance if it is not the gauge, its the front cover *o* ring and gasket installation that is at fault. Do yourself a favor and go to the Mazdatrix.com site and look at the FAQ. There they define how that *o* ring can cause low oil pressure. I follow their lead and do not use a front gasket, just RTV. Had that problem, got over it. CYOTE 1.....I do not understand *cuz mine is leaking bad*. The part that I do not understand is how do you know that if its inside the engine? Just curious. And I kind of agree that SAMPS has the wire off the sending unit or its a broken wire.

COYOTE 1... if you are standing in front of the car and looking aft, then on your left is the oil metering pump which is not the *oil pump* for the engine. It is an oil pump, but just for those little oil metering lines that go to the oil injectors. Darn things do leak at times. Hopefully its just a loose bolt. There should be a copper washer under the head of each of the four bolt heads. Try just snugging them up without over torquing them. Mazdatrix has new lines if required. Mazdatrix.com.

If you weren't getting a signal until recently, you probably still aren't getting a strong signal. I'd recommend taking the wire of the sending unit and cleaning the contact areas.

After an oil change, I spilled some on the sending unit and the connection got weak. I too was reading zero pressure until the revs got higher, then the reading were still a little low. I thought it may have been because of the 0W30 oil, but cleaning the contacts on the sending unit returned the readings back to normal.
