In late '99 Mazda changed manufactures for their oil filter. The current versions available in North America are built by Tennex for Mazda.

The Mazda filter has about twice as much filter area as the Purolator and the AC Delco versions.

Ive cut open a mobil one and a purolator pure one. The pure ones internals are slightly nicer except for the bypass valve which is soem kinda high density particle board as oposed to the metal and rubber seal on the mobil one. Mobil filter had alot of excess epoxy oozed up around where the element meets the endcaps. Pure one had more plets and a metal reinforcment connecting the two endcaps. I have a K&N i will cut open after 1k miles, i looks good from the outside though, except its not synthetic media. I'll probably get a stock mazda filter next and cut it open to see how it compares to the 3 big premium filter makers. Arnt the stock ones paper media?

I plan to now. I take your words very seriously. I will order a few. I guess the Purolators were just a convienence issue. I refuse to pay the prices for the K&N.

K& N is high just like the synthetic oil BUT I always take better car of my cars then anyone I know to the point that my wife hates me sometimes BUT...

my cars always run as good as possible and run longer than most. When I do sell the new owners get a solid car in good shape. MY 7 is probably the worst shape of all my cars I have owned but that is just till I can get it painted.

I dont mind spending too much on parts no and then but not all the time. I will not buy another K& N but I needed something "right then" so I did. I will have MAZDA filter for the next time.

Mike

Mostly on subject, but I use the Mobile 1 filters. Yes, they are expensive. But my oil is always clean. It has never been very dark. just a little more than new oil, even when i waited too long for the oil change. I ahve tried many other filters, and there isn't anther one that did this well.
