what brand did you get??? That happend to me before, not on my rex but on my passport. I was like "ahhh how cute, now where is the one that goes to my truck" Anyways you should get the oem filters I've heard they are the best and other people like fram (mostly hated). I used fram and besides it giving me 15psi more of oil pressure I didn't see anything wrong with them.

I use purolator Micronics, they are pretty small..., about the size of a baseball. the mazda stock units are also pretty small as compared to a bigassed fram or something.

I cheange my oil every 1500-2000 miles, so i'm really not worried about the filter getting cloged between changes

smaller filter isnt better?!?

i owned a civic and ran the baby filters. its smaller and gives you more oil psi. at a cost of the oil pressure release valve opening sooner to let unfiltered oil to circulate in the engine bay. now with me having an s13, i have relocated my filters and run a dual setup. i run less oil pressure and now i have gone from 3.75 quarts of oil to 5.25 quarts of oil. either way i went from a clean engine(d16z6) to a very dirty motor(ka24de). so much so changing the oil every 2000miles with dual filters and the oil is almost always a darkening brown. and every 7000miles i do an engine flush to clean seals and sludge build up...

It drains after shutdown, so on startup it has to fill before the crank sees much oil flow.
A big filter would take longer to fill.
The drain down helps turbos by lessening the risk of cooking the oil in a hot turbo.

Hey, that brings up an interesting question- mine doesn't "drain down" too well after the rebuild. All oil system components are the same as before the rebuild. Anyone got a magical answer to that one? Doesn't bother me too much other than getting oil all over the place when pulling the filter...

You generally want to avoid using Fram oil filters. Use the stock Mazda oil filter. It has almost twice the internal filter area than a Fram or Purolator, (well actually almost three times the internal filter area of a Fram) as well as the stock Mazda filters have anti drain back and clog bypasses to protect your engine.

In addition there have been members here who have had the Fram with its lame internal glued end caps fail and dump cardboard into the engine.

I read a really really interesting oil filter review, they covered everything including fram. Fram got last place, it was made incredibly cheap and didn't even do a filtering job. The best one was the K&N. Let me see if I can dig it up...

Yeh, I think that was the one written by the very people that wanted to sell you the "best" filter...Be careful of what you believe on the internet, man...

Give us an article out of a respected, edited published magazine or periodical, then I'll start listening...

If I cant get the OEM Mazda filter then what should I use? I may not be able to get the Mazda one right away.

I am not driving the car anymore today and Mazda is closed now anyhow.

what is the second choice?

i bought the car with a newly replaced filter that was failry large...it was white, and i forget what was written on it...

the Mazda OEM filter, which is what i use now, is smaller than any other filter i have seen for the car. for the price, i wouldn't get anything else.

but second choice i think K&N makes a good one...i think

Where can I buy Mazda OEM filters? I'd assume just at the dealership.

I like the K&N oil filter, they are just a little over priced at most places. Summit has them cheap.

Mazdaformance.com normally has the Mazda filters in stock, and with shipping just about what I pay at my local dealer for one.

oh, i just want to add that i noticed the oil pressure raise and go down a little faster with the OEM filter compared to the bigger one i had on there. also more 'response' while driving in terms of the oil pressure reading...

Apparently Mazda has changed the OEM filter. Since '90 when I bought my na coup new the OEM can was rather small. Recently bought one for my vert at a Mazda dealer. They came out with the same style and lettering (JEYO 14 302 9A) which is about 1/3 again larger. They had some small cans in stock but were only getting the larger ones when they ordered them.

Please avoid useing fram filters. they are just plain crap.

I swear by useing factory Mazda OEM filters. they are pretty small in comparison to other filter's on the market. But ask anyone, they have a filter quality that surpasses them all.

They can be purchased by the sleeve of 10 units direct from Mazda

mazda has a new filter for these cars, its smaller then the old ones, not sure if the old filters are still being made, the part numbers are the same except for one letter or number different, I also did a double take when I got them delivered.

I've been using purolators. on my car. On my Ford truck I use Motorcrafts, which are purolators. I guess i ought to go oem on them. I always have done that. It's just the local part stores don't have Mazda ones.
