What would you do .. buy a low mileage (40k) trans or a rebuild it ??

I'm in the dilemma of buying a lightly used transmission with aroud 45000 miles on it with a 30 days warranty for around 300 bucks ..... or I can buy a rebuilt one for 325 bucks .... or I can have mine rebuilt for 300 (not sure how damaged it is though). I'm pretty sure I'd get a warranty with my rebuilt trans.

It's an S5 T2 transmission .... and I'm just not sure what the best route would be.
What do you guys think ??

Seems like a no-brainer... rebuild it!

$300 seems way cheap for a rebuild.

$300 = 45,000miles (supposedly)
$325 = New (apparently, seems cheap. I can have it done for $850 + tax CDN)

You're wondering whether 45,000 miles of wear is worth $25?

Is this serious?

But I'd like to know more about this "$300" rebuild....you've got my attention.

does the rebuilt one for 325 come with a warranty? If it does I suggest you get that one then rebuild the one on your car yourself slowly. That way you will have a spare tranny incase anyhting happens.

If not I suggest you just get your tranny rebuilt. 25$ is not worth cheaping out for.

A rebuild for 300?

The OEM parts alone for a rebuild cost more than 300. I would take the used low-ish mile tranny. At least you know they are OEM parts...

Any place that can make money off of a 300 dollar rebuild isn't spending enough on quality parts.

O.K., OP - I'm confused (insert Canadian joke here). Also, Classicauto, $850 for what exactly?

OP - $325 would be O.K. for a rebuilt one with warranty or $300 for a used one with warranty, but I'd go for the last option and have it rebuilt with warranty. That way you know exactly what's going on. Make sure the rebuild kit is from a reputable company - can't help you there. Most likely, your tranny just needs new synchro's and bearings, if the gear's aren't bad. I'd personally risk spending a bit more (assuming you need something extra), but knowing everything's good inside.

This is the option I chose a few years ago, and no problems since.

edit: yes, $300 sounds very low for rebuilding...

$300 is very low for a rebuild.

I used to have a shop that would charge me $200 for a dissasembly and reassembly. I had to provide all parts and deliver the transmission out of the casing ready for bearings to be pulled. I had to do all of the clean work on gears and bearings and they would reassemble. I don't recall how much parts cost. Usually it was just new synchro rings and shift forks. If you have to put in new gears or bearings it becomes very costly.

I would like to see a 40K mile Turbo transmission. It is probably JDM Yo.

If it really does have 40K miles then I would buy that. Who knows what they fug up with a $300 rebuild.

I got a rebuilt one from www.rx7world.com. Comes with new syncros, bearings, seals and anything else that needed replaced. It was $1200 shipped with a $300 core charge. I would stay away from the $325rebuilt one. The parts alone are closer to $500 for OEM. I couldnt be happier with it. Its nice and tight and feels brand new.

Thats from Action Transmission in Simcoe. I deal with them for all my tranny work at the shop, very reputable.

I also believe Rotary Dynamics does tranny builds. You'd have to ask Jim what its worth though, and it will likely come down to whats salvageable as you know.

Be aware that the Jspec (yo) transmission has different gearing; If I remember right it has a higher numerical 5th gear. That equates to higher highway rpms.

Think your talking about the difference betwwen s4 and s5 gearing. If you are talking about turbo trannys the s5 turbo trans has the same 5th gear as the 3rd gen 5th gear which would give you lower rpms.

Nope, wrong.

The factory S5 trans (at least in the Canadian S5 TII that I'm referencing this experience from) had a taller 5th gear then the J-Spec S5 TII trans I installed in the car. Result was higher rev's at any given speed in 5th gear.

Only about a 400rpm difference @ 90km/hr, but a difference nonetheless.
