What are these pieces in my oil pan???

So I was stripping my newly acquired S5 TII engine of emissions and unnecessary stuff, in general just getting it ready to drop into my 91 coupe. And at some point I heard something slide from one end of the oil pan to the other. Thinking what the ****, I took the pan off to find these pieces, chilling in there.

I need to know what they are, where they came from, what I need to fix

So here are the pics..

Looks like I have (1) spring about 3/4 inch long, (1) something that threaded into something else has a hole through the center, and notched for like a flat head, and (1) what seems to be like a ball bearing???

Please help me out, I thought I was "almost" ready to throw this in, and now I'm pretty scared of whatever this means.

Thanks

Matt

Where was this engine acquired from? I'd try and get a refund.

Thanks for the replies guys, I sure hope your wrong though, after looking through haynes and FSM it seems they are the parts the oil pressure control valve on the rear iron, and upon inspection its clear open and the ball dropped perfectly in and the threaded peice would thread on, if the threads weren't fucked.

It seems somebody stripped it out, thought it would be good and put the pan back on. Does this sound right?

Anybody know the trick to removing this pressure control valve? And where I can find a replacement?

Matt

The guy I acquired the engine from, his name is Eddie Gonzales from Vineland, NJ I don't know much about him other than he is a really great guy, had a blue datsun coupe set up for drag with a turbo bigger than the 13b in it, and a half dozen TII longblocks laying around.

Seemed like he knew his stuff, I'll contact him if it turns out to be anything bigger than the oil pressure regulator came apart.

The two oil pressure regulators are hex headed. The oil jet has a slit in it for a common screwdriver.

wow, thats shitty, your correct though, so whats with the check ball and spring. I was looking up regulators, and say the oil jet eliminates the ball and spring? so why were both sitting in the pan, spring, ball and jet.

Anyways, so what do I need to do, get another oil get, take the front cover off and put the new one in?

you need to take the complete engine apart in order to replace the check ball spring assembly,if this pieces came off while the engine was running(i really dont see how)you are Fu&^(* up
So you better talk to this guy and get your money back.

I don't see how these peices made it to the oil pan without destroying everything in its wake? I mean there not even that bad, the ball doesnt have a scratch on it, the spring is near new the only thing that is even a bit beat up are the threads on the "jet"

Is it even plausible for this to happen?

Ah they just vibrated loose because someone didn't STAKE the damn thing in like he should have. The parts made their way to the pan just like the oil that gets sprayed into the rotors by the jet.

Kinda sad dealeo. Sorry 'bout that.

By the way, I bought a engine once from the wrecker yard and rebuilt it because that's what I believe in doing with unknown parts, and found a small set screw in the pan.

Came from the oil pump housing because somebody DIDN'T STAKE THE DAMN SET SCREW WHEN HE INSTALLED IT! And that's what I think about that.

if this pieces finished in the pan the same way oil does that means that all the bearings and the oil pump are junk to.

Are you sure that isn't the oil pressure regulator? It would make sense that it could end up in the oil pan. If it is, and the engine was run without it, it would not run for long.

When you tear the engine down, and are pulling the intermediate housing off the eccentric shaft, take note of the very large hole in the intermediate housing that lets oil return the pan.

Actually I had to think about that several times and have some doubt (very little if the truth be known) if that's how it made its way to the pan. I mean, think about it. The oil jets spray large volumes of oil into the inners of the rotors themselves. It's gotta have a easy return path to the pan. There is where the intermediate housing comes into play.

Sure hope I'm right about that. Too hot to go look at a bunch of engine parts to confirm it. Too busy watching MOTOGP online and the qualifying for Laguna. Lorenzo on pole, Rossi second, Stoner third. All within a tenth of eachother. Hayden in eighth.

By the way, I THINK some racers remove the ball and spring for the jets and open the hole in the plug on purpose. So maybe the bearings etc are no junk. See RETEDS SITE.

Well, if you do get a chance to check it out, let me know, because I'm not tearing it down till I'm positive, I might not even take it down any further till I get a hold of the seller.

Here's a couple of jpg of the E-Shaft and the Intermediate housing. Right off my pristine parts rack. You can see the jet in the shaft and the large *** hole in the intermediate housing where spare parts can be lowered to the pan for later use.

I'd really like to sell you these parts. I'll sell 'em for half of what Mazdatrix wants AND pay for the shipping. Send money first though. Trust me.

That's just superficial rust. Seen worst. Not to worry. Send money first. Don't think about it too long. One time offer.

After recently building my own turbo engine and seeing how many little areas that can be messed up or half-assed, I'd be pretty reluctant to just drop in somebody else's shortblock now.
