Question What are the rest of you freaks doing about fan shrouds?

I have a Koyo Rad, and I want to continue to use the stock (belt drive) Fan. The problem I have is that with the bigger Radaitor my fan is sometimes bumping my stock shroud and chewing it away piece by piece. I'm open to suggestions, aftermarket shroud? Custom shroud? Pic's would be nice.

I mean it's functunal as it is right now, but I'm not happy with it.

Thx,

Robert

I have thought about that .. the problem being;

The only side I could trim to cure the problem would be the Rad side of the shroud, but that is where the lip is that has the holes and such to mount the shroud. If i trim it how will I hold it in place?

If the description is confusing I can take pictures on my lunch break and show you what I have going on here.

I am worried about that blades cutting more and more into the shroud till one bump it catches the whole damn thing, and breaks a blade off, or just tears all kinds of **** up ruining somthing, or my Rad.

I did a couple of runs last nite with the shroud completely out of the car, A. it ran quite a bit hotter (nothing dangerous, but noticeable) B. dangerous those blades can do some damage to people or parts pretty easily.

I've removed my shroud completely, think it's been off for about 6 months now, I still have the factory fan/clutch assembly and stock radiator. heat's never been an issue. I'm going to still replace the stock radiator and install an electric fan but still not putting the shroud back in, I think it give the engine bay a better look

I don't really want to go with a E-fan. mainly cause of the power draw. I have 2 amps, CD player, lots of electronics, I run the AC and blower all the time in the summer. I just the think the E-Fan will pull to much draw. Plus my personal opinion is that the stock fan cools better.

Pic of the shroud attached;

This is really bad. Please don't advise people on the forum to do this...

What the original poster might want to do is put an electric fan inside the stock shroud. Otherwise, trim the shroud and use angle-irons to make a new mount.

I know everyone is against removing the shroud, but its your engine bay, do what you want.
I removed mine long ago and have driven on the hottest days no problem whatsoever...and everyone who has removed says the same thing..more convienent to have open bay and no heat issues...
Eventually I'll go aftermarket, but till then no shroud....
And I know some of you cringe at this notion...????
And this is my OPINION, just like everyone elses, Im NOT ADVISING anyone............................................ ......................................

I'm curious...Do those people who remove their shrouds have oil temp gauges?

I've got no shroud (well, I do have an e-fan) and no undertray either! I do run a VDO oil temp gauge, and it never goes hot unless it's on a race track.&nbsp Highest I've seen it on the street is 210F, with ambients in the 120F range.

You might check out vintageair.com. They have shrouds that are more designed fro E-fan's but perhaps something will work for you.

Check through my pics and you can see what it looks like. It's a very nice piece and they have several sizes/shapes.

This is the best advice. You should be able to buy or make little brackets suitable for this. Cut the shroud down to where you want it, then position the brackets as required as screw them into it.

Not to get to far off topic, but how much does the undertray help heat? I have not put either of mine back on since my rebuild. Nor did I really plan to.

I guess I will try to fabricate soume mount if I cut it down, that sould like my best option ... it's just tht I have no welder, or welding experiance, so I will have to do somthing that involves Nuts/Bolts/Drills.

Now, if you all would just chime in on the post about my bigger problem I attched the dyno sheet of teh boost. ... Plz.

The undertray forms part of the basic miniature wind tunnel that all of your heat exchangers sit in. Remove it, and not only do you decrease flow, and the suction of you fan, but you also open up your car to reversion of airflow, to where air comes off of the fan at a stop, and goes right back through the front of the radiator.

Not good. Not good at all. Some people remove these items with no adverse effects, some cars will suffer greatly. I have seen both sides of the coin and decided that it is not worth the risk.

I'm running an electric fan inside the radiator shroud. Before I found out that the Stant Thermostat was causing my overheat condition (no jiggle pin), I put the shroud back on. Later, I realized that I had to return to using an OE thermostat. No more overheats, but shroud is still on, soon to pull off. I'm looking into using a 30 AMP Relay that is normally closed to shutoff the fan, when the car is in 5th gear (45mph and higher). Figured that I would tap into the wire that feeds 12V to computer, when only in 5th gear. I think that its the L1 wire. In every other gear, voltage on my car is 0.22V or less on that wire. Drop out voltage of relay, I read, is 1V.

Running without a shroud WILL KILL YOUR ENGINE. However, it will only kill your engine if it sets still for more then 3-5 mins with the engine on. The temp will climb rapidly after this amount of time. (tested using mechanical autometer phantom gauges)

I installed a black magic e-fan and I must recommend you do this, It is so worth the 200 bucks (160 most places)

You can mount it side ways with the clamp method if you trim the battery stand and use some other method of holding the battery in place. I had to cut the bracket a little bit, and use HUGE zip ties to hold the battery down. (isn't pretty but it's functional AND it keeps the fan's rubber boot pressed firmly against the radiator (unlike some other installs).

If the KOYO Radiator has a lip around it, you can use the clamp method, it works well and keeps the boot pressed up against the radiator for max air flow through the radiator. If you are worried about the draw, upgrade to an FD Alternator. I'm about to do this as I also have a rather large stereo setup in my car.

Anyway, good luck!
