Clean everything real good and measure it properly using the factory service manual. If anything is out of spec replace it. Inspect the rotor housings for flaking chrome. Basically if you can see it flaking you probably want to replace.

what do you mean "flaking chrome" is there really chrome on then inside of a rotor housing??? i wouldnt think so since it isnt very durable and it isnt on the inside of piston engines. can someone else back this up???

When rebuilding you want to use new seals and gaskets. Clean all the parts and inspect and measure them. It is best to replace rotor housings with new ones but its not recommended unless there are scoring and flaking marks. YOu can reuse your side housings but it is always a good idea to have it lapped. Rotors are definitely reusable just make sure there are no cracks and chips anywhere..
Im also going thru the same thing (rebuilding) and it cost alot because the engine is new except rotors and e-shaft. Does 3K for parts alone scare you???..

alright i know to replace seals and gaskets and measure everything. i will reuse my side housings because i am pretty sure the engine is in good shape though it has a lot of miles. i am getting the lightweight rotors from pineapple. how much do rotor housings cost and where do i get them.
yes. 3k definitely scares me. how can that be if i can get my engine rebuilt professionally fo 1900?
i know to get it all cleaned
what is "lapped"?

You can get a rebuild kit from atkis rotary, www.atkinsrotary.com for about 800. thats just seals and gaskets. no housings or anything. mazdatrix's faq has some examples of bad housings. mazdatrix.com. if your housings are not all messed up you can reuse them. it gets expensive when you ahve to buy new housings (900ea). but you can noramaly picked up used ones for cheap. i have been told aht you can reuse housings, but you can feel a difference between motors with used housings and motors with new housings. i am personaly reusing housings. just to let you know, 1900 isnt that bad of a price. after you get into it you will relize just how much work it is and you'll think 1900 is a bargin

If you have extra cash, use the 3rd gen rotor housings. I had used them on my 6-port for my vert. After break in, I had finally tached it to 7gd. I definatly feels stronger..

Last thing.....in regards to the stock rotor housings, you will notice deflection plates on the exhaust ports. Instead of grinding them out, I had decided to use 3rd gen rotor housings.

on that note. a little known fact is that you can swap just the exhaust port sleeve. so if you can find some junk t2 housings you can take the exhaust sleeve out of those and put them in your na. and waahlla, no more exhaust diffuser. and T2 junk housings can be found for VERY cheap b/c they are bascily usless excetp to us na owners.

i dont think you can switch the rotor housings due to the fact that the coolant seals fit into the rotor housings on TII's and the side housings on N/A
