Replace the cats with high flow ones. Modern cats now only give out about 2 psi backpressure. The cats on your car are really poor flowing. IMO that is probably the single most HP robbing unit on your vehicle right now. Remember i'm talking about matrix style converters. Good luck.

im a turbo guy, but my order (for HP) would be
exhaust
intake
headers
computer
pulleys
plugs/wires

injectors wont add performance, but they are necessary to support higher HP. personally im not a big fan of underdrive pulleys, but they will free up some HP.

A N/A has little torque to begin with. No offense, but if you want to drag race, get a TII. A N/A is made for top end. Off the line in my n/a, I could take any ricer, but from 30mph on up, I could beat any Mustang I met, and run with Trans Ams (LS1). If you add exhaust, yes, backpressure will be lost, but top end power will increase. Reevaluate what your goals are, then modify from there...

On my N/A I was runnin:
-Racing Beat Header
-Racing Beat Presilencer
-CAP High performance clutch
-Weapon R filter
-Wired open ports
Just in case you care

I'm gonna butt in here with my humble opinion.

Rant On:/
DON'T DO ANY MODS UNTIL:
YOU HAVE HAD A COMPRESSION TEST OF THE ENGINE
YOU HAVE HAD A COOLING SYSTEM PRESSURE TEST
YOU HAVE PERFORMED A MAJOR TUNE-UP
Rant Off:\

No use in polishing an unknown TURD. The "MODS" will put an increased strain on your car/engine. Why spend all your hard earned bucks just to bolt on some stuff and blow your motor. When you have a good running engine and baseline of what the car is capable of in STOCK form, then you can experience the Benefits of whatever MODS you want to do.

Ya hes right. Its always best to start as close to 100% with a car you are modding. Definitely do a full tuneup.

Ok so I got a 88 GTU with a new 1.3L engine, less than 2k on the engine. What should I perform as a tune up? I imagine the guy putting in the engine knows what he was doing, but I will definitely check the compression and cooling system pressure.....

DShot, IMO you fall in a different category. We need to know about your NEW engine, Was it built with new housings or used housings. Have you followed the brake-in guidelines? What did you replace (other parts) when the engine was installed? The two heater core ccolant houses and fuel/vacuum lines pop into mind.
If the motor checks out ok, I would do reliability mods first, Then I would concentrate on the exhaust system.
Define your goals, set your budget and do some research. Just because Catback System "BS" is the hot item right now does not mean its the system for you. What are you emissions requirements? Can you tolerate noise? CAN YOUR NEIGHBORS TOLERATE IT?
What is your goal? DRAG, ROAD, AUTOCROSS, SHOW, HANGING OUT and impressing your buddies? They are all legitimate reasons and they all have DIFFERENT requirements. You can spend a lot of money and be disappointed or spend a little and be happy as a pig in s&^t. Are you going to drive the car in the winter? U norht the salt will toast a mild steel system in a heartbeat. Go quality Stainless if you can afford it. 304/304L low end to 321 (Big$$$$), 347 (even bigger $$$) Good luck! John

Remember the basics and keep it simple!!!

I bought the car with the new engine already in....I have done nothing to the car, it just sits here waiting for me to decide what to do with it....The car is not going to be driven in the winter. I already lost a 1st gen to the winter. I don't know what the break in guidelines are or if they were preformed or wether the housing is new or not. Judging by looks it appears to be new....I will have to call the guy who put in the new engine to get that info....

- D

P.S. My intentions are for show, hanging out, cruising, road...I want an all encompassing package. If there is such a thing??
