What kind of gas should we be using?

What grade are we supposed to be using for stock cars, 88 Turbo II in my case, I'm assuming 87. And when do you think is a good time to bump up to a higher grade, full exhuast, intake, ect?

also has anyone had any luck with full system additives like STP, or Red Line? I tried some STP and it seemed to help with that tank, but not so much afterwards.

Turbo cars should always use the highest grade possible. That's not always possible for people so it's okay to use 87. When you start doing boost above the stock limit, you should always try to use high grade octane to avoid detonation.

I use 94 octane ever since I got my car.
My t2 is modified quite a bit. My tuner said its ok to use 87 once in awhile though. I guess for long trips you could use 87, but if you're racing, 94 or 110 is it.

This isn't 100% true. You shouldn't use 100 octane if you dont need it. Your car should run on the octane that is required by your engine to not ping. That may sound a little dumb, but let me exrapolate a bit. You get the most power out of the lowest octane you can run without detonation.

In my opinion, you should run 93 on any modified T2. LONG LONG AGO, I ran 90 before I had any mods... then I switched to 93 and got an extra 3 or 4 miles per gallon.

I read somewhere (might of been here) that the NA 13B was designed to run at maximum performance on 80 octane. And some racers actualy use special made 80 octane on race day. Now in a turbo of any kind, I would suggest 91-93, but race gas in a turbo 2 with just an exhaust and intake ect. is a lil extreme and probably a waste of $$$

Whoa, I meant highest possible at the regular gas station. Around here the highest octane is 91. I think it's different elsewhere.

2 ways to tell if you are pinging:

1 - You will hear it. It sounds like popcorn is popping in your engine.

2 - The second way to tell if you are pinging is that your engine is blown.

.... sad but true.

Here is my take on the whole octane thing. NAs can easily run on 87 octane. Stock T2s can run on 90, but I wouldn't use anything but 93 (or whatever the premium octane is in your region). Modified T2s should definitely be using 93. I specifically only use Amoco 93 (but I know it doesn't exist everywhere...)

my 2 cents.

at 15 psi, i would go the highest grade possible, but at 15psi you should first be concerned with the amount of fuel not the quality of it.

I know this question is off the subject but, I'm going to ask anyways. Kurgan, what type of rims are those on that car in your avatar?

So now that i know my cars pinging..how do i prevent it?

i get low popping when i half the gas pedal half way down, like not giving it gas but not totally off it.

i sometimes get huge back fires or low rumbling pops. sounds cool, but i guess its not good.

btw, i have all my emissions removed as well.

what can i go about this,

mike

I sometimes have that popping noise too.
I like it but I guess its bad
This may sound crazy, but I am running 15 psi without extra injectors. Thats why I drive like a stingy bitch and never fully throttle the car. My HKS boost controller isn't working properly so its stuck at 15psi.
I have so many damn electrical problems with the car (Alarm, Turbo Timer, Radio) This winter I hope to fix all this stuff up.
