Um, have you ever driven a front wheel drive car with a little bit of power. It's much easier to do a burnout in a FWD vehicle. You just pull the E-brake, rev the engine, and dump the clutch. It's pretty simple really.


Whenever I tell anyone that I drive an RX-7, if they know a little about cars, I always get the same question.

"Does your RX-7 have that rotary engine in it?" I always laugh and tell them that all RX-7's came with the rotary in them. I even had a redneck V-8 lover tell me one time that the rotary engine was the best thing to ever come out of Japan. It's funny how the rotary seems to be the only import engine to get props by the V-8 guys.

I'm not a redneck, but I do have a V8, and I like the rotary, VR-4, and pretty much any engine that is Turbocharged. I hear how addictive boost is, so [redneck voice] "I gotta get me summa dat der boooost." [/redneck voice]

 

me im happy to tell people about the rotary engine when they are curious. my 7 was the first car i gave a **** about and bothered to learn about. never was interested in cars before this so i knew nothing. i still know very little about the working of a piston engine really. just the basics... boing boing boing.....

i gotta laff at people who act like they know what they are talking about though. like the guy who told me he threw a rod in his 7..... no V8 conversion here..... he threw an honest to gooness rod in his rotary powered 7...... this was after telling me about his 7 for about 3 minutes..... i didnt make the guy feel bad or anything, just didnt wanna talk to him anymore and cut the conversation short.....

rico! you are the shisnit! I have been trying to think of an analogy for the rotary for awhile now and you hit it on the head! "2 doritos on a stick" !!!!! HAHAHAHAAAA!

Well as for the stories I have been an *** to people who think they are all cool and try and be car gods, but generally I just explain to people how it works, and If they still don't get it or want to see what the rotors and what not look like I take them out to the car, open the Haynes and show 'em. If we are in class I go to howstuffworks.com and show them there.

I got a good one for you . I was once racing a talon tsi with more spent in engine manamgment alone thatn I ahve spent total in my car. He rapes me off the line ( as all DSM's like to do) but after 60-80 ft I flew by him like he was standing still. Now get this as I fly by him my passenger looks over at him with this big grin on his face and starts waving "bye-bye" at them. So I pull over, the guys says "What the hell you got in there?!?" I look at him with a cheesy grin and in my best redneck voice I say "1.3l of fury!" and just take off again!

 

On the same sarcastic note as most of these posts have been, the rotary engine is TECHNICALLY a german engineered engine... but we all knew that, right?

I usually try to educate anyone that actually questions me about my car. They always ask how many cylinders are in it and then the whole conversation goes downhill....

On a different note I was at the track today when a kid comes up after I run and goes man that thing is fast! And then he proceded to tell me his buddie has a 5th gen that runs mid 11 stock! I just laughed and went with it!

Not really a fair comparison to a RWD car doing a burnout, since you're actually doing a brake stand. (Not a full brake stand, I know... but whatever. What would you call it? Roll control?) More comparable would be doing a burnout without the ebrake, or doing a burn-out in a RWD with line-ok.

But you are correct. Even my friends 3-cyl, 1 L Suzuki Forsa can put out tire smoke by dropping from 6000 rpm with the e-brake on. No way that motor would produce smoke if it were RWD.
As well, the weight shifting to the back in a FWD car reduces the normal force over the front tires, thus reducing traction. On a RWD car, the weight shifts over the rear, aiding traction.

 

well, we're talking about describing our cars, but my rx doesn't run yet, so i'll tell a different, funny story - whenever i'm with a bunch of honda guys, and they start popping their hoods, i'm like "You guys want to se the smallest turbocharger in the world?" and then I pop my volvo's hood. Hehe. People think it might be a fast car because of the 'Turbo' badge on the back, ehe.

Yeah, I agree. I didn't say it was fair to compare burnouts, I just said it is pretty easy to do one in a FWD car. RWD takes quite a bit more power. I don't think my RX-7 could even do a burnout. Unless you count burning out the clutch a burnout, hehe.

 

what cars do the 13b engines come in? what years?

 

i had an old country guy ask me once (in the twangiest southern drawl you can imagine)......what the hell is that thing ....a spaceship? and this was in 1993. guess when your looking at squirrels all day an 86 white rx-7 just might appear to be a spaceship?
