Re: What kind of aftermarket Clutch do you have.

My 88 TII had a Centerforce Dual Friction clutch that worked great. It was actually easier to use than a stock clutch IMO, but it had excellent holding strength. This would be your best bet for city driving or if you let other people drive your car on a regular basis. However, it seems that few people on this forum have the skill to install these correctly, so you may want to use something else if you think this will be a problem.

Hmm, I didn't know that South Bend made clutches for imports. If you get one, please post a review.

Well, first of all, it has a 500 mi break-in period. I hope that your clutch came from a wrecked car.

Typical installation error which causes CFDF-phobia:

The correction:
https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showth...threadid=16587

The Center Force web site, as well as most generic automotive repair manuals, also have some basic clutch installation tips so that you don't end up screwing up the installation like amemiya's 3 buddies did. Like I said, if you have any doubts about your abilities, then have a good automotve shop install it for you. The most expensive clutch job is the cheap job that fails quickly. BTW, the CFDF can hold more torque than a stock-turbo TII can crank out, so it's not going to slip unless you install it incorrectly.

Hey you guys have been a great help.
The shop i am going to get it done at
quoted me $420 for the centerforce and
the same for the south bend. labor is $165,
and he said that they would have to do some
thing with the flywheel and thats $29 bucks.
Overall its gonna be $614 unless i can get some
sort of discount. Is that a pretty good deal
or what. Thanks and later. Matt22

You can get an ACT Street/Strip (what I was going to run at first) from the RX-7 store for $330. The $29 he quoted is to resurface the flywheel.

IMHO ACT are the best cultches. They have the best pedal feel and they grip tighter than your g/f fingernails during those top speed runs/ light to light races. Use one on my 1990 TII.

I showed this to my g/f. She thought it woudl have made more sense if I had said "tighter than your g/f's fingernails when you are 'doing it right'" wink wink.
Did I mention she rocks?

ACT!

I bought the ACT Street/Strip last summer and i am very happy with it! It has very good grip, and you can abuse it alot with out smelling/slipping, wich the stock one could not do..... I really think ACT is the best, everybodes happy with it from what i´ve seen, the Centerforce is 50/50 and i see alot of complanes (Spell?) on it.

I have a clutchnet copper clutch with sprung hug. Its pretty easy to drive. It remains to be seen whether or not it will be able to handle all the power.

The installation price is good. However, I hope that the South Bend comes with a pressure plate for that price. I'm not sure which kind of South Bend clutch you are considering, but you really don't need something all that strong for your GXL. In fact, the CFDF is much stronger than what you need. You can get the CFDF for about $300 at Mazdatrix:

The CFDF doesn't make rattling noises. If your clutch is making noises then it has some serious problems. Yes, ACT makes very good clutches, but the ACT clutch/pressure plate combos which compare to the CFDF have a very harsh engagement and are not recommended for street use.

It sounds like you would like something with a harsher engagement. You may want to try out an unsprung clutch and stiff pressure plate like the ACT XTR4 or XTR6.
